It was a Jaguar Xj6, early 90's in Royal Blue. Bought on an online trade, for £200.00.

Had a great AJ6 engine that run on no engine oil at all!! I've always wondered how it lasted! I found out as I thought of topping up the engine oil as the gauge tells me it's about time, bought a couple of litres, only to find that the car burns fuel, well, couldn't afford an overhaul then, so i decided to just drain it the engine of enough oil --that remedied it. Lasted me a good year, during UNI days, the straight six kept me out of winter and rain, and effectively made my ASDA trip a joy. Year end comes, The big blue cat, retired to a recycling yard.

No, its always been bloody high rage I started off as a named driver on my dads insurance, otherwise it was telephone numbers insurance wise frown I wish we could have a insurance system overhere like they have in Austraila, Correct me if im wrong but, when you road tax your car in Austraila you are automaticly covered for third party insurance!
Nope. NSW has the following system

Car registration is about $250AU for a year on my car, more for larger cars, less for smaller cars.

On top of the you have to purchase a Green Slip, which is Compulsory Third Party Insurance (CTP) this covers medical costs basically. For me (under 25) this was $500AU.

Then, Comprehensive Insurance is on top of that, and is comparitivelt affordable. I currently pay $740 odd for my e36, and looking at around $1600 for a modded (chip, exhaust, suspension, stereo) 2003 Audi S3

Mini - 1275gt. Horrendously unreliable, uncomfortable, fell apart. And brilliant fun.

I passed my test in 1994 and got XMA 356E - '67 ragtop 1500 Beetle with disc brakes and everything! Chinchilla grey, black interior and US spec bumpers. DVLA website says it's still about and now red, I'd love to see it again.

I swapped it for a bay camper 18 months later and had some great adventures.

I was also given a Lancia Y10 Fila (Crazy blue seats) in white/rust around the same time as something practical to run into the ground....but it just wouldn't die!

G411CAC - A 1990 VW Polo 'L' 1.1

Hateful little st-box, spartan interior, sod-all toys and a 33mpg 45bhp wood burning stove under the bonnet. 88mph top speed and £770 TFPT in 1994!

But it got me about, plenty of room to move stuff around in and completely anonymous. Built from RSJ girders. Kept it for two years, got my 30% no-claims and traded it in for a '96 Pug 106 GTi biggrin

Good times.

Mine was a 1.3CL which wasn't much better. Oh how I wished it was the 'GT' with a whole 75 bhp!

My first car was my dad's hand-me-down and it was a wreck. It was an A Reg Nissan Praire 1.5 SGL in Gold! Surprisingly it was good fun, there was something about throwing a car about that was not built for being thrown about. The engine blew and our mechanic friend had a written off nissan sunny in his yard, which was a 1.3 so this went in to my car to replace the 1.5. Then reverse gear went but I didn't really need that anyway so I just drove without it. It saw me through the first 6 months though and got me mobile.

Some excellent stories on this thread, gotta love the first car! It's an honourable title I think. Particularly love the Alfa story, and the 205xs. Keep it up! smile

As for me, my first car with my names on the papers was the 1984 Honda Accord 3 door, in the year 2000! All 950 kilos with 100 horsepower and a 7 grand redline from the 1.8 12 valver. It loved to do it too, but even better was the steering and gearbox compared to everything else everyone had at the time. Some had better cars, but I really liked the gearchange in particular. I've not driven a car yet that was so easy to shift fast, and this was on the original box with 240 000 kays. I wanted to do so much but the engine dumping it's oil and then throwing a big end bearing... it was beyond my meagre ability to fix. So, sadly it was wrecked.

If I can find another one, i'd buy it and do it up. It was a great car, great space, practical, fun, economical, and if it had better suspension it'd have been a brilliant thing, because the feel from the controls was all good. And I think it looked good. More coupe than hatch.

DAD 097, you were a great car. (the private plates from previous owner. source of much fun-making by my mates.)

E418 ECF was my first chariot in 2001 or thereabouts. Little Mk2 Fiesta Festival in green with pink go-faster stripes. I wedged some four spokes off a Capri or something on there which as far as I was concerned made it out handle any touring car, and I stuffed a Peco big bore 4 on the back which with its massively improved gas flow was probably good for at least 20bhp at the wheels. Last seen hanging out of a hedge at the bottom of a huge hill after a 2am 'max speed run' where 105mph was briefly indicated on the clock. Interestingly the steering wheel acted like an airbag when I butted it and bent right round. Had a protruding and blackened forehead for weeks after, good times........

Now that is a very classy first car. Like the chrome side strips.

Whatever you do, keep it well maintained or it will expire very quickly.

And Waxoyl, Waxoyl, Waxoyl. Do it with the car bone dry and don't skimp on it. biggrin

My first car was a 1990 Plymouth Laser RS, imported from the states (by the previous owner).

It was a production of the DSM (Diamond Star Motor) company, which made 3 similar cars on the same chassis; The Mitsubishi Eclipse, the Talon Eagle and the Plymouth Laser.

I'd only just turned 18 (which is the legal minimum age to drive in Holland) and i was so happy with it.

It had these funny seatbelts which would just hang in front of you when you got in, and then when you turned the enige on they would go on (over/around you) automatically.

My 1st car was a 205 XS.. a 1.4 with twin Weber carbs.... only a tad slower than a 1.6 GTI 205 at the time. I wanted it based purely on it's drive and while all my mates wanted cars that looked good I was happy in my small lil' 205.
What a great car, I had the later TU engine 205 XS, might have been getting on a bit but best car in the school carpark by miles...convinced my dad I had to have it when I was 16 so I could "prepare" it for when i passed my test!

...spent my p/t job wages every month on another bolt on bit (never occurred to me to save up and buy something bigger/worthwhile! I even painted the 'guttman' grille, eyebrows etc myself (and most of everything else in my dads garage!)

It felt like a flying machine and I crashed it too many times to count, but it just kept going (it confused the hell out of the tyre place when they couldnt get enough adjustment to set the tracking thanks to bent suspension!) Sadly I eventually killed it when it had a side-on argument with a tree at 50mph+

I learnt so much about driving, spannering and being a petrol-head that year, proper life-affirming experience...oh to be 17 again :-) ....internet explorer>www.ebay.co.uk>search;"205....)!!!
