The purpose of the show is to save classics and keep them on the road for a few more years, the quality of the paintwork doesn't affect the cars ability to continue to be driven.

On some episodes (like the blue-to-grey Bentley one, and the blue-to-white Fiat 500 one) they gut the entire car and it is given a full respray so they DO care about the paintwork, especially on some of the later episodes.

The worst one that I can remember paintwork-wise was an old capri that Ed changed the wing on, he sprayed it himself in the workshop with rattle-cans and it was a mess!
That Capri was a disaster, wasn't it?!

I take Wheeler Dealers for what it is, entertainment. Edd does know what he is doing but they can't throw endless cash at the projects.

There used to be a programme that was somewhat similar to WD. Hosted by Dominic Littlewood (the bald headed guy from Cowboy Builders). instead, they get a client who wants a certain type of car that's out of budget. They would then find a cat C/D car, repair it, and see if the client is willing to buy it off them.

Remember the early ones were on a strict £1k budget. I think they did a fine job. Ed's bodywork skills are't 'laughable', more 'suitable'- i.e. making good rusting metal, treating and filling etc, and spraying with a rattle can or professional bodyshop as appropriate depending on car value and budget. A fair representation of what many of us seek to acheive in our garages at home.

I have seen a lot of those. My gripe with these is, whereas WD was a program aimed at the hobbyist, that show with Dominic Littlewood was trying to make their efforts look like sound economical sense for a 'trade' job where professional mecahnics were paid to do the work. Come budget time, they priced up the whole job without labour! Some of those jobs were huge and very specialist (VX220 episode springs to mind!).

just saw the suzuki sj show , spent ages and ££££ doing it up , then the mot man said it needed 5 days welding lol
the suzuki one was good, it showed that anybody can get caught out with a project if they rush in, so from that angle it was a very good program as it must have made a few people think before parting with their cash!

they could have just canned it and never owned up

I remember that, was some stuck up toff who wanted an elise for 50% of the price so they find a crashed VX220, do it up for about £200 over his budget then he tells them to jog on.

Yeah I thought the same thing. Those who are criticizing the show obviously missed the point here- it was aimed at the hobbyist. Everything they did was pretty honest for a TV show! Those who are taking the michael have obviously never bought a lemon before? They realised the Suzuki was not a goer so they sold it at a loss with an honest description to the buyer.

Edd is a bodger - 'Let's slap some filler over that rust and make it look good until it rains'.
I don't rate his quality of workmanship at all.
You realise you're watching a TV programme - yeah?

I saw a repeat of the 944 ep recently and the bit where they talk about removing the 'TURBO' decal from the front wing makes me shudder - it's factory original isn't it??

Haha didn't he turn up in a really mundane car acting like it was really sporty? ISTR him having some re-sale silver hatchback and boasting about how good it's performance is and how well it turns heads! Laughable chav who doesn't even follow through on his request...

The VX220 was a very ambitious project anyway. They were unsure whether it had any chassis damage or not but bought it anyway eek I wouldn't fancy taking any chances when this is the chassis in question:

(well that's an Elise but you get the idea!)

It makes me shudder more that Porsche ever fitted such tat but in terms of selling it, I would have removed it too as there aren't many 12 year old buyers who would be impressed by it. wink

Yes I think the show is completely staged. I emailed these guys, was really desperate for a car follwong a huge car accident, needed a car really badly and loved my 80s cars. I said just do one and I will not haggle and pay you. But obviousy this wasn't great TV material. So not a peep. I dont know also why they show people who offer really silly sums for cars, and tell them thanks for wasting my time and air it. All for show. It wouldnt surprise me at all if all of the show was staged.

LOL i dont expect them to do requests, why not just find a local mechanic and get him to restore a car for you?

Ermmm... it's called 'telly'.

If you believe any of it, well, try not to.

I was going to post up on here the other day but couldn't see a thread....

A run of quite a few newish episodes were on the Discovery Turbo channel a few days ago and they were all reasonable to watch. A Fiat 2400 'Dino' coupe and a Morgan Plus 4 provided some visual pleasure.... the Dino had a tiny bit of bodywork sorted (Edd didn't do the paint, as usual these days) and the distributer was refurb'ed, then the Moggie had a full chassis change. One extreme to the next!

It was a decent day's TV for someone stuck at the parent's with nothing much else on inbetween countless Christmas leftovers sannies smile

Did anyone see the XKR episode where Ed used that machine to clean the internals of the engine?

Wondered if my cars could do with it now!?
