Apologies if this has come up before, and a little off topic.
Anybody played/playing the number plate game?
An office I worked in back in the 80's, a bunch of us started to see who could get the most - You start at 1 then see how far you can get, by actually 'seeing' the plate on the road, rather than a picture?
I got up to about 250, but had to stop as it was getting too dangerous ( I'm a bit of an obsessive ) and I'd spend more time looking at car reg plates than actually looking where I was going!
The other number plate game, useful on long boring motorway journeys is constructing a word that contains the three letters of a reg plate in consecutive order.

I've got to say I agree with the councils, what is £150k (or even half a million)in the scheme of things?
[quote TheSun]
But the F1 plate is now believed to be worth around £5m and is said to be one of the most valuable number plates in the world
£5M!? Should it also have added "in the opinion of a Bradford resident"?

Nice plate, but you'd have had a bump on the head paying that for it.
Yep, absolute rubbish. Some discussion earlier in the thread about top values - quite possible that a few single/singles might hit 7 figs if ever put up for sale, but certainly not £5m. I also have sympathy with the councils; the earliest reg numbers are a piece of local history, and uniquely they can probably trace every vehicle since 1903/4 they have been on.

F1 was up for sale for about two years before a deal was done. It was advertised and advertised and offered around all over the place, it was hardly a secret deal that was done, and now it's worth five million? Yeah, ok mate, righto. nuts

I bet that at some point in the future some UK number plate will sell for £5m. It's just a case of when because it certainly isn't worth that now or in the next few years.

The council were offering it for a long time before it was auctioned, it went to sealed bids etc. They were trying to get Bernie to buy it at one point.

ETA. I think they first offered it for sale in 2004.

My guess (think I’ve made this point before in this thread) would be that long before then, cars will be fitted with some sort of transponder / tracking device, making number plates a thing of the past . . . . .all it would take is EU wide road pricing to help this along and that theoretical £5m would be worth £0

I'm not usually a fan of Irish plates but I saw 'JAZ 1' on the way into work this morning, fitted to a lovely black Porsche 997.

I also saw 'T1 GME' spaced as 'T1G ME' on the way home. Not sure whether I like this or not.

Saw SEM1 on an average looking Exec Merc the other day, would've been more appropriate on a supercar of some kind.
