Just something to see if it works. Mod on Duty!

Slightly above budget, but with a spot of haggling it might get in there (or simply wait another week for the epic depreciation to continue its relentless march)

Pretty much an ideal spec and colour scheme for me... Am quite tempted.

What are peoples thoughts on and A8 (D3) 3.0d quattro vs a Merc CLS 3.2 CDI. I think I've decided that I want one or other of these cars (though an E60 535d is tempting but all those in my budget seem to be abused).
The Merc is a lovely looking car with decent MPG but the A8 is a bit left field and seriously quiet and comfy but possibly a tad boring. Anybody know what the running costs and pitfalls of these cars are? Anyone owned both?

I could go CLS500 and LPG? Is that allowed
You say Merc but you own an Audi. Is that the voice of experience?
The C5 is a completely different animal to the C6, let alone a D3 and was within a certain budget at time of purchase. You say Merc but you own an Audi. Is that the voice of experience?
It fitted my V8 (albeit thirstier than I would have liked), practical and panzer-build requirement.
I do, however, covet a W211 E63. so that's probably next!
I like D3s, but the CLS for me is a more attractive package in diesel form. They don't share the same class either. I think the VAG diesel engine sounds far more agricultural.
As for reliability - I couldn't comment.
Infact, the CLS500 is an excellent choice. The renowned M113 V8 is bulletproof and has more straight line shove that you'd think, considering the 55k and 63 are as near as makes no difference 500bhp.
Thought this would be a better thread to post my thoughts on than starting a fresh...
Wondering what peoples thoughts are as I may be in the following situation in a few months (job etc)
What's the most comfortable, mile-munching 'nice place to spend time' car for £5k? With As low as possible running costs?
Interested to hear what others have owned and their thoughts.
ETA: not interested in LPG

I'm not sure this is a bargain but seems like a rare find... What could possible go wrong?

Just a smidge over budget this one, however I simply had to share it for the spec. I was searching for an F01 with a towbar btw, this is the only one.
