The market for V12s is miniscule! For what it is the value is immense.

I had a 745 of similar vintage, and that was fairly ruinous. I'd imagine the V12s are in another league, which might explain why the market is so small....

I quite like it being a bit of a Luxo Barge fan, but the figure of £12K is more than I'd pay although £12K would come into it say 9 to buy it and 3 to run it for a while.
Until you've had a car with cooling seats on a long journey on a hot summers day you'll find it difficult not to want one without. Cheap road tax would also swing it for me as well.

I looked at this one, and the (very odd) brown one from a while back, before buying a 54-plate one.

(in fact, if you go back to when they were last in thread, mine's listed there - if anyone's that interested, you can see a pic. or two on the 1-5 thread, based on the Duxford meet 29th Dec.)

The specific example here wasn't as well specced as mine, and to be honest, this era of 7-series is never going to be an oil painting, so a pre-facelift actually appeals more to me! That, and the post-06 tax debacle (I know it's nothing in the scheme of things for a car like this, but it still galls to pay £500+ instead of £290) swung it so I didn't buy this one. (It's otherwise OK IMO).

If you want a real laugh however, put the car in for the bmw-approved warranty, & get a quote! I have successfully bought, fuelled & maintained my V70 for one year for substantially less than the yearly warranty quote on a 760iL

About time I threw my latest buy into the thread for comment... although I'm not certain it's really a barge, or a bargain

Always thought I'd be the type to live exclusively on the 1-5K smoker thread, or even the basement thread, but a lack of suitable cars around when I was looking (isn't that always the way?) and having some extra cash around from my bike insurance claim let my budget drift a little higher

I was only looking to replace my E39 530 'loon as, after 18 months without, I decided I really actually did miss having an estate. So an estate it had to be and that turned out to be quite limiting. I drove many cars before this one clicked (although they weren't all 2 grand over "absolute max budget").







So I am now the happy owner of a freshly imported JDM, 58k mile, Subaru Legacy GT Spec-B (Bilstein suspension) 2.0l twinscroll turbo auto estate
A car (and even the idea of buying an import) so completely off my radar I'm still not sure how I ended up buying it!
Paid £8k, spent the best part of another £1000 immediately on a full service inc belts etc and undersealing it properly so I know approximately where I'm starting from.
Actually has a bit more space in the back for 3 adults than the E39 did, plus a lovely big boot again

The clever little turbo works really well, twinscroll means, as far as I understand it, it's got 2 sets of vanes so it spins up quickly to minimise lag on one set then through a fat midrange on the bigger set. You do lose a little ultimate power at the top end, apparently, but that's not a problem for me on the road. You can choose between "eco" (which limits the boost) and full fat for the engine, and drive or sport for the box. With both in "relaxed", it's quick and eager, with both in "go", it's verging on brutal for a decent sized estate
The silly exhaust cans aren't too antisocial (and are a factory option), it's noisier than the E39 on a cruise (mainly the frameless windows I think plus a bit of the exhaust), the ride is firm but very well controlled.

It overtakes so well, my wife who normally goes a bit quiet and grips something when I do go for one, just laughed instead... she said "you do know it costs you a tenner in petrol every time you do that" and "I wonder if people are thinking they're just been overtaken by a rocket powered hearse!"



So... a good buy that I'm really enjoying... not convinced at all it was a "bargain"... can I still claim to have a barge??

I know this is slightly OT, but I am considering an move for a new car in the near future.

Obviously a barge!

I am thinking

Audi A8 - finding a petrol model for this is a task. Age over 2009.

Infiniti Q50s Hybrid. A left field choice, rapid peformance (5.1sec to 60, 400bhp) and interesting - but it's a posh Nissan. Yay or nay?
£20k gets you a good one.

Lexus GS450h. 13 on. Posh, better than the Niss-finiti at luxury, but not as fast. Huge deals.

Lexus LS600h. The super barge. A bit dated and poor on mpg (but hey I do 8mpg sometimes!)

Volkswagen Phaeton. As with the Audi and LS. Huge deals. Very understated posh.

Jaguar XJ L. My favourite to look at and just oozes opulence. May be tough to park and find for less than £20k?

Mercedes S Class. Not keen on the looks (pre facelift looks better IMO) S55?


Must have:
- auto
- leather
- nav
- Main dealer history
- newer than 09 (bar S55), Phaeton newer than 12
- sub 20k

Very similar scenario but different car, I wanted a winter estate and this turned up locally - a outback with the H6 motor and nav 2006 61k miles uk car.
I really really like it however the 3.0 has poor torque and a frenetic top end, the handling on m&s tyres is "interesting" to say the least.

My 2008 760i had over £5k of warranty work to the telematics alone at 6 years old
