That's nice but .........

Would this be a better buy? Much cheaper and still supremely wafts. I'd be very tempted were I in the market. Is this too cheap?

Depends if you're likely to venture into a congestion charging zone I suppose! Plus there's that extra cool factor of those awesome rear seats in the first example, the 2nd has a very ordinary-looking back seat by comparison!

And probably only just run in, cheap road tax (relatively) but as you say a bit overpriced.

Total lunacy for the money
A couple of these were floating around the £5k-£6k mark around the end of last year but I thought I'd be sensible and wait until the new year but I haven't seen one that cheap since.

Budget for coil packs (£1,500ish) and a ABC system refresh with new pump (Manufactured pumps circa £500, not the many ££££ you often see quoted), filters, fluid and good hose and it should be as reliable as any other W220, but with nothing more than a remapped ECU and TCU they'll bang out 11 second 1/4 miles and put bus lengths on almost anything on 4 wheels from a roll.

Awesome cars, but I do wonder who is spending nearly £10k on them. Too much money to be 'disposable' if a major S600 specific component were to fail but not enough to make a bill deep into four figures a no brainer.

That ad says 68,000 miles. It could be a car which is in good condition but unfortunately that is all it is worth. Such a lot of car like you say and makes you wander if the 65 is really worth double the money.

I thought the coil packs were only of concern on the 5.8 N/A V12 due to the selective cylinder shutdown tech that the biturbo doesn't have.

Does this S class suffer the same foibles as the CL of this era. Would love to sample this engine, but as scard by the horror stories of the CL. If this S class is somewhat more reliable, then it could be a viable option..
What hp do these put out with a re-map?

I'd imagine they're basically the same car just with different length bodies.

To be fair, the 65 is a completely different beast and cost twice the S600 when new too.

Hello all,

Need a bit of advice on a pending barge purchase, there's some really good knowledge on the thread.

Budget up to 8k. could push that a little. It's going to be munching motorway miles across the M62, Machester to Leeds 3-4 times a week. Covering 450-500 miles a week.

Must haves:
cruise control, distance sensitive a real bonus. The current proliferation of average speed cams on the M60 and the smart section into Leeds makes this essential.
Auto
Decent stereo, DAB would be nice. Would like decent am reception. In stty traffic I quite like a phone in/ talksport.
4wd. Not 100% on this but the M62 frequently warrants a detour across Saddleworth and in the winter that can be quite a challenge.
Big. I am a sturdy sort.

List is currently:

A8, Toureg, Phaeton. Are they dreadful money pits at this price?

If I ditch the 4wd it brings in a host of Mercs anything else I should be considering? I've a heavy right foot so probably diesel rather than petrol as I don't want to be filling up every other day.

Over to the experts, any advice really appreciated.

I'd be concerned about the reliability of a Touareg or Phaeton. Have you considered a Merc R-class? Could get a nice R320 CDI for your money

From the research I did the coil packs on the NA and TT are the same, and even if they aren't identical, they are still a known problem on the TT and still sodding expensive.

Apparently the NA's didn't run with any sort of knock sensor and instead used the electronics inside the coils that could monitor detonation better than a traditional sensor. The TT do have a traditional sensor along with the det monitoring coils which are supposedly why the TTs gain huge amounts of power on high octane fuel because the ECU can detect detonation so precisely on each cylinder.

Almost helps justify the cost of the coils. Almost biggrin

Are they a bit dodgy then? I'm having outside thoughts of next motor and going more bargey. I'd love a FFRR but the bork scares me at my budget and mileage, hence was thinking a Toerag V10 Altitude might be a safer option...

I thought the Touareg V10 eats tyres quicker than it eats diesel.

How about this XF - http://tinyurl.com/ojyab5b has the 4.2 V8, MOT until July 2016... has the 4.2 V8, all for the princely sum of £7800. Sorely tempted, fuel prices low, Alfa's sprung and oil leak from somewhere (and developed a bit of a knock from the rear under acceleration from a start and it's an oil burner).
