Guys can I ask of the more techy of you, I am after a Honda Legend at £5 / £8k bracket - a rare beast but a few about, once they drop out of the Honda dealers the rear diff oil change doesnt get done every 18k and the car I like most has no history apart from oil changes from 2010 to 2016 when it had a huge service.
Its only £5k but its still £5k !! the diff it if goes will write the car off - would you take a chance ? ones in the Honda dealers are £8k to £10k and for a car thats as popular as an STD I dont want to pay that much.
I looked at these a couple of years ago. A real stealth barge with 4wd and, as I recall, some sort of rear wheel steering, or did I dream that?

This is calling me.... I've been to see it and cosmetically it isn't perfect but isn't terrible either.

It was on ebay 6 months or so ago in Yeovil or Taunton with a terrible listing and photos taken in the rain, I dithered and it sold for £17,xxx.

The current outfit have had it up for £23,995 then £21,995 now £19,995.

At £18k ish I could be very interested;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122044285456?_trksid=p20...

Only problem is I have since bought a low mileage w211 e63 AMG which would either have to go or be part of the deal on the s65.

No doubt the s65 would be ruinous, I had a very quick glance through the service history and there was a service bill from MB a year or so ago for full suspension replacement, full ABC system etc, cost something like £9k....... Still it was a £180k car new I think.....

Never knew these existed til now! Wiki says 8,518 cars built.. Wonder how many are still on the road? I'd take the previous 262C over one of these, very "Lincoln" looking to me?

(Volvo's official production total for the 780 is 8,518 cars built between 1986 and 1991. From 1986 to 1995, Volvo offered a small, sporty coupé, the front-wheel drive Volvo 480, but a successor to the 780 would only be introduced in 1997 when the C70 became available)

Lovely car! I too have pondered over purchasing a Merc with the standard 5.5 V12. But if you can get the 6.0 version then why not!?! They're so rare that they're in investment territory? What do the later S65s go for?

No RWS but torque vectoring but its still a barge. I didnt get one and got a Subaru 3.0 outback which is a superb car! however the minute I bought it a 30k mint Legend came up at £7500 near me - I personally wouldnt pay that for one as they just dont sell and all the ones I looked at 6 weeks ago are still available and the garages call me with even a "make us an offer" from Chiswick Honda!

I went to look at a low mileage W220 S600 with the 5.5 v12 TT and it was a lovely car. It does leave me wondering though if that is the more sensible way forward, a very good S600 with the 5.5 v12 TT could be had for £10k ish whereas a W220 S65 is twice that. Is it twice the car? I doubt it. I agree they could potentially be investment territory but I would use the car adding miles and I expect i'd have to keep it a long time to see any meaningful appreciation by which point the running costs would have outweighed the return anyway.

The later W221 S65 are generally £25k and up and more like £30k ish for a nice one with sensible miles. There was a 2006 car in black with caramel interior with 200,000 miles for sale for some time at sub £20k but it was not very desirable.

I think the price W221's can be had for does count against this W220.

The W221 is the better car, and would be worth the extra money to purchase. Yeah I agree that for 10k that an S600 or CL600 can be bought for, it makes sense to go with one of these instead. You're not hit with AMG-tax for specialist parts and/or consumables, on what is already an expensive car to maintain properly.
And a remap of the 5.5 takes the power pretty near as well. Plus you enjoy more of a Q car status - especially if you de-badge it!

Hello all, I just posted this in the BMW section but on reflection it's probably better here.

Is a cheap E60 535d jus asking for a kick in the wallet?

XM5ER said:
I just thought I'd throw this out to the massive.

I'm looking around for a cheap winter runabout at the moment and I've always fancied a 535d, I'm wondering if they are now well past their sell by date. Is the twin turbo an unnecessary over complication and I would be better off with a 530d or a newer 525d (LCI thingy)? What about electrical faults, same for all the models I guess, is there anything else I should look out for apart from obviously chavved up neglected dung heaps?

Thoughts welcome.

By reputation the pre-LCI 535D is a fair bit thirstier than the facelift model, and much thirstier than any single trrbo model: that may or may not bother you. The single turbo models also have significantly less plumbing to go wrong and underbonnet heat. Personally, for a given budget I would trade performance for recency and condition, and would probably look for an fresher LCI 530D or a 3.0 litre 525D instead of an older, probably doggier pre-LCI 535D.

Thanks Lowtimer. I think I need to be spending more to get a nice one which kind of defeats the object. I think I'll go back to my original plan and pick up a nice 330d m sport instead.

As a trader you must be thinking this will take an age to shift? Even at 12 large its a lot of car to maintain.

I have one. They're no more than any other 5 to maintain. Fuel is a different story obviously.

Yes, I think once they're down into this low price range the pool of potential buyers for a big petrol estate is strongly limited by the fuel and the £515 VED. A few years ago of course a big petrol barge of this age was protected by the Bank K category for anything registered before 23 March 2006 but as that date slips further into history the more modern stuff gets hammered for the full amount.

If it's your only car and you drive it all the time the fuel looks hefty, whereas if you have it as one of several cars the VED looks excessive for the use you get out of a year's charge.

Indeed. The major cost I found is electrical gubbins, common to all 5s. I'd rather have the 550i than a 20d or 30d with all the turbodiesel anciliaries hitting 100k+ mileages.
