What have you had done to the X5?

I managed to look after my 2005 3.0 when I lived in the US, on a shoestring.

It had its faults (had the transfer case actuator apart a few time) and dash lights but soldiered on.

Was looking at a 4.4 of similar vintage so I am interested in your story!
Nothing major, just the accumulation of lots of jobs:

Gearbox oil leak and a few other minor oil leaks, cv gaiters; suspension arms; airbag light (twice); both folding mirrors, boot lock; door handles etc

TBF it needed nothing in the previous 2 1/2 years so if that's it for a while then fine.

If it continues then I may rethink

Yeah, sounds like pretty 'normal' wear and tear type stuff.

If it has been good for a couple of year previously and remains so for a few more years, the costs don't seem bad.

I wonder what was causing the Engine management light to be on for the last MOT.....
If you're really lucky it could be a poor seal on the filler cap.

ETA - pinched from the 1-5 thread but it's a W12 Phaeton, as requested smile

I wonder what was causing the Engine management light to be on for the last MOT.....
I read the term "cosmetic damage" and then the description went silent on it..... so, between engine lights and damage, that might need some brave pills!!!
Some very strong brave pills, the W12 is a fabulous car but the older cheap ones are at the very least potentially ball breakers. The later W12's say 2010 onwards all seem to sell within three days of being advertised so it would seem everyone knows they are a bargain.

Not much to look at on the LS460, you've got the standard trim, the SE, and the SE-L.

nearly all of them are SE-L, so just avoid the others as why not get a fully loaded one?

Boot capacity may be an issue. Still have a lot of kid related paraphernalia to lug around

Not quite a barge but a lot more iconic than some Fiesta at the same price.

Yes that's true. The poverty spec one has a bigger boot due to lack of 4-zone climate.

I wouldn't though.

Erm. What has that car (2k non barge) got to do with this thread (5-20k barges)?

Had a go in a 2010 E500 coupe when it was new. What an awesome car - but epic depreciation though. I think the owner was offered around 20k after 2 years, for part ex from main dealers!

A better comparison is back to the W140 really, as every car in the range has inherited the gadgets from S-class levels that the public consider necessary (e.g. electric seats etc):

My W218 is similarly-dashed to the W212 in the pic and I really quite like it. I certainly don't jump into it and find much to hate. Yeah the 129 has the old school feel but they both have their merits. Mind you I don't immediately hate everything post 1xx-model so I may be on my own here.
