I love your car. Personally I would keep it standard as I think in modified trim it will frustrate you that is will never be perfect (I have spent a fortune on a MK1 Golf and I think it was better before I started as it was more pure to the original)
I have considered going back to standard spec, but the thought of going back to soggy suspension and the under constrained front end doesnt fill me with joy. I do know what you mean though
Could you not go down a quality Coilover front route with ARB's and then re-bush everything plus add coilies to the rear. Didnt a lot of people weld in strut mounts to MK1 Escorts etc to sort the handling?

I love the other pics too, the Red one is fantastic.

I drove My Mk1 Golf today and still wish I hadnt put the 20V Turbo engine in it!

At the moment the car has 25mm adjustable front anti roll bar instead of the stock 23mm, it is poly bushed, uses Koni adjustables with eiback springs- and 215/55 VR 15 front tyres instead of the original 185/70 HR 13s.
I think I've done as much as I can with the original set up. Its not as bad as Mk 1 and Mk2 Escorts (mainly because BMW used angled anti roll bar mounts- where as Ford didn't bother) but it suffers from wheel migration into the wheel arches under heavy braking. The lower links are already forged. I think the E21 was the low point in terms of front suspension development for BMWs, as the 2002 before it and the E30 after it had better located suspension- that what irks me the most. It has alot of castor as standard which is nice. In the US- alot of E21s suffered from front wheel shimmy and it is said that some of the BMW front suspension design team were sacked! May be as an engineer I just know too much- the equivalent to a doctor being a hyperchondriac! It bothers me that the crank shaft is cast iron instead of forged steel alsowink
It's also nice for me to design my own stuff, such as cam shafts and intake manifold-exercising my expertise and creativity, without having to compromise for emissions -like I do for work, and the suspension needs to follow suit.
I dont know, may be I'll change my mind after the body comes out fresh...

totally rebuilt with a new shell. It will use Z3 M coupe underpinnings and will soon house my next generation of mods unleashed: 3.1 litres, 8000 rpm capability, my own design of cam shaft (296 degrees) and 6 speed box.
Does this not mean you are actually building a new car? What are you going to carry over from the original one that came out of the factory out of interest? The steering wheel?

Love the old 3 series. I remember being driven (at speed) in my Uncle's orange 3dr 323i. He owned a string of lovely Beemers in the 70's and 80's, had a minor crisis with a grandpa green 525E in 85, but then pulled things back from the brink with one of these in 1987(?):

My dad was going through his Vauxhall phase at time and although the Cavalier CD was a nice car, I was insanely jealous. My Father finally relented and bought a new 535i in 1992, but by this time my Uncle had upspecced to a next generation M5 (although I never liked it in red, my dad's dark metallic silver 5 looked a lot smarter, as well as a lot slower).

Good point, alot of my colleagues have pointed this out also.
Initially, the 2.7 litre engine will carry over, and the same block, and re worked cylinder head and other components (ancilliaries, exhausting etc) will be the same as the new 3.1.
The interior will be the same, dash, wiring loom, doors, sun roof, window glass..
Point taken- the car is pretty much evolving and ub flux

Great first car and fantastic project. Also, thanks for the info on the mods and the 3.1 engine.

I adore E28 and E12 5 series.
Especially the E12 M535i! lick
I think the E28 M5 was rawrer than the E34 M5 which was altogether more civilised

What a great first car. Mine was a Vauxhall Chevette, took a few years to move onto E30's, now I can't seem to move on, stuck in the 80's (although mine is 1992)

only just got round to reading this but what an interesting tale! Such a cool car, and, back in the day it must have been even cooler!

Love the fact you still have it, and love the snippets about all the tweaks you have made!

That's exactly what I thought!

Not being cheeky or anything as it is a lovely car, but it just sounds like the entire car has been swapped bit by bit!

The E34 535i is a great car at any age, let alone 21, but that insurance premium is nuts.
