Had the little brother (Delta HF Turbo) and still loved it- even without 4WD it was one of the best balanced cars I've ever driven (traction control wasn't even thought of then...)

The best, no Evo or Scoob comes remotely close.

Fantastic cars without doubt, and one of my all time favorites to watch, especially in full max out tarmac set up with uber wide wheels on and Martini red war paint.
I also get pangs of jealousy however when I read about the Delta, because its long standing rival on the stages, the Celica GT4 is mostly ignored and written off. In the day they were rivals both on stage and forecourt, yet while one has reached almost pope status, the other has be consigned to histories small print.

( I own said Delta rival so I am biased !)

I think more than anything else the Integrale had a mystique and air of history about it that still rings true today, plus the fact it was a damn fine car to drive.

Hmmmm tasty- I always fancied a go in one. Lets face it 200+ bhp in hatches of that vintage certainly ain't "the norm".
Mind you up to £40K for mint low mileage ???? Are they seriously worth that?

Big fan but not worth £40k LOL. £32k tops if you were mad enough.

Imagine buying that then actually driving it, youd lose thousands and there too good to just sit in a museum or garage.

Lovely example though.

The thing is with the Celica is that the Japs will never take risks when releasing the road car version as they don't like bad publicity if anything goes wrong.

The Italians take a gamble and it pays off, this time, but think of all the other Lancias that have bad reps.

Which GT4 are we talking about here? I drove the older one pop up headlight model, and it was a fat slug? Certainly not comparable to the Delta?

From my user name you can guess I've got an Integrale.

It's a yellow EVO2, competely unmolested and has done only 80,000 km.
I bought it from those other Integrale experts, Walkers of North Allerton over 5 years ago.

An Integrale needs a driver a lot more skilled than I to get the very best out of it but the car is every bit as good as it's reputation.

In expert hands, I still think there is nothing much that could keep up with it on a wet B road or an alpine pass.

Owning one is both a pleasure and a pain in the wallet : Running costs are not cheap and it would be hard to get away with less than £2,000 a year if it were being used a lot.

But it turns heads wherever it goes and every enthusiasts who sees an Integrale on the road knows it's the real deal. As for everyone else they just think it's another old hatchback, but they don't really count, do they ?

The original ST165 version which was compared when new directly with the Integrale, most memorably by CAR magazine.

Re the risk thing, the early celica was the first car to be sold with a catalytic converter, so a bit of a risk for a jap manufacturer, but I do know what you mean

To me the Delta was always the more emotive car, and I think its appeal grew as its wheel arches widened.

To be honest the GT4 is a cracking car, but was set up VERY mildly (and understeery) in stock form. Tighten up the suspension and the rally car in it shines through. Its a good platform for basic power upgrades as well, since the engine is rock-solid.

My only problem with it is it feels so "un-special" from the interior. Especially compared with its twin, the MR2 Turbo, with the engine howling behind your head.

Well, no bugger is going to be the voice of reason then I will! rofl

I adore the Growler - best mate had an 8v KAT with Leda 2.25 coils on. Astonishing.

Until you needed to service it - engine out to do just about anything, upside down oil filter, bonkers electrics, and just waaay too much mechanical things for a little hatchback. It nearly broke him financially.

Then there's the thing about the chassis seams - as I recall they have so much mechanical grip that they will literally tear themselves apart over time?

>>The Integrale never competed against the Quattro in rallying - they were built to different regulations and ran in totally different eras. You've borrowed Peter Tomalin's words from an old Evo mag and they're still wrong.

If that is true I have been told/read porkies! This is annoying, which Lancia competed against the Quattro then and up to when the quattro raced?

Did Lancia and quattro ever raced against one another?

Lancia 034 and later the S4 IIRC.

EDIT 037 not 034.

The 'Grale was a group A car, I think Audi called it a day with the demise of Group B.

Lancia 037 and Delta S4 were the Group B cars, I think.

I so need one of those...

The best thing is that it started as a normal, unassuming, hatchback in 1979. A friend of mine had one the 1.3 LX and it was great in the early 80s.

But then, because of the Delta S4, they moved onto different types of cars which had to be homologated.

The Delta was there, available, ready to become a superstar!

I adore the fact that it grew fatter and fatter, bulges everywhere, just standing still is a mean machine, the bulge in the bonnet. The wider and wider track to fit better suspensions in, the overboost facility ahhhh...
It still has one of the most complex suspension and 4wd system around I believe...
