RE: My First Car
Discussion
I had three of them (two manual, one auto), so I guess it could be said I quite liked them.
The last, had what they described as long range tank which would take about 35 gallons! but hung out behind the rear axle, as it was, seriously affected the handling on the few occassions I could afford to fill it (think pendulum, very very heavy pendulum)I remember I kept on looking under the car to see if the fuel was falling out somewhere when I was filling it. But given that it had Laycock de Normanville overdrive on third and top, I could go for a substantial distance.
I dread to think about filling something like that up these days, a tankfull would be circa £180-00!

Jellison.... Yup 35 gallons!???? I think the tank must have been pinched from from a Hercules transport aircraft, and I only ever filled it up, when going on holiday because it meant I could often do the also the only car I ever had where one could visibly see the fuel gauge, moving backwards when the right pedal was floored..... nowadays that would just be too scary!!!

I really love these cars and there are some nice examples for reasonable prices on fleabay. But reading the horrific stories about fuel consumption puts me off a bit...
Would a conversion to LPG be an option?
They are not that bad on fuel. I average around 24 mpg. The problem with LPG conversion is it would take up most of the boot space as there is no spare wheel well to put a tank. The alternative is to put a tank under the car. This would involve having a smaller petrol tank fabricated and putting the LPG tank along side it. Plenty of room as the SE5 has a 17 gallon tank and SE6 has a 20 gallon tank.Would a conversion to LPG be an option?
Fuel consumption ?...haha...don't get a V8 Wedge then.
- Owned loads of vehicles with the Ford V6, and rarely got less than 22mpg even with auto.
I'd expect around 25mpg, and that isn't too desperate.
In April's PP Car mag, article about someone who'd fitted an Omega 2.5 (same as BMW) diesel in his Scimitar. Seemed to work well, and economical too.
