Although the bid was low, he wasn't far off the mark - assuming, of course, that they can actually get anyone to buy it at auction.

The problem with auctions is that they tend to be populated by the trade, and the trade is being very cautious on anything other than easy sellers.

Friend of mine was at a BCA auction three weeks back, and was absolutely staggered at what wasn't being bid on.

I spent a great 6 months working at Dublin airport (yes, I'm partly responsible for the big mess of construction there right now) and apart from enjoying a good few pints of the black stuff I was amazed at the property prices. And the fact that almost every bit of green land was being built on.

We visited our local veedub main stealers last wekend as the bread knife is looking to change her bug for a derv version. Anyway we test drove one that was a 53 plate and was up at £8995 which was a bit steep but we only really wanted to see how they went but we gave off the right vibes. Anyway the monkey salesman goes and crunches some numbers and returns with an offer of £3k for our 51 plate 1.8T Bug against the derv yikes

When i picked myself up off the floor and enquired how he came up with this price he replied " Well that's all we would get for it in the block " BLOCK say i, oh Auction i mean say's numpty.rolleyes I explained that there was absolutley no way that i would let ours go for this amount as you could not buy any version of a Beetle in any spec for this amount, and told him that this was not an auction but a main stealers hence me coming here.
Any way as it happens they have an identical car to ours same colour spec etc but on a 52 plate with 20k less than ours and it's up for £7495.00 which i pointed out to him so off he went to talk to his manager but we just left in discust before he returned.
I have to say that allthough i wasn't looking to buy my piss was boiling when i leftfurious
talking of Viz, you are Cockney W@nker AICM £5. biggrin

(don't get upset, this is just a joke - you appear from your writing style to qualify for the first word and we all qualify for the second)

No disrespect to your comments, but i wasn't at an auction and therefore it should not of even entered into the conversation. The guy was taking the piss IMHO and you say that the price was near to the mark you tell me where to buy them from @ 3k co's i'll take half a dozen.

The auction would be where your Beetle would be sent to be sold though, so it is relevant.

His low offer was probably a hint to you that they didnt want to take it in p/x.

I think a lot of owners need to realise that their cars arent worth anywhere near what they think they are at the moment.

Not anymore. There was a big clampdown last year on drivers converting their commercials back into cars. Huge fines and in some cases, cars/jeeps were confiscated.
Is Ireland the only place in the world with a commercial porsche?

Commercial road tax is a lot cheaper, they used to be called blind vans and have the rear windows replaced with a steel panel, it seems now they get away with a very dark window tint, not sure about whether rear seats are officially allowed or not.

And if it is worth more than that, why not sell it yourself and get more?

Customers unrealistic expectations are as big a problem as the economy at the moment, then the finance is an issue too, lots of neg equity.

Well update we sold the car today a few months later (today) got £1900 for it first person to see brought it was a fellow pher with a rather lovely focus st. We had to ring up the other 5 people up who wanted to see tke car today and turn them away and the car had only been advertised for 3 days. So basically resurrected to show to everyone that mocked me and the car was indeed worth the money I predicted. Also was due a service but we did say that to the person who brought the car off us who were very pleased with the dealsmileWe are happy and they will be as well as it is a cracking car for the money and will serve them well in the future. You also could not have met two nicer people and parents where happy that they got the car before everyone else.

I agree. I'm just stunned you got so much for it. Well done you.

(I personally think the buyer needs their head read)

The market is not on its arse for this sort of stuff , small low tax , low insurance vehicles and sub 3k are flying off the car lots and from private ads , most are downsizing or new drivers whom don't want a brand new Clio or Corsa with £99 down and xxx payments round there neck .

If you'd sold it for £20k, would it make the correct value of a 9 year old Fiesta £20k, or would it perhaps mean that someone had paid over the odds? Well done for selling it - you're happy and the buyer is (apparently) happy. However, it must be twice the book price!

You sold a 2000 W plate fiesta for £1900 roflthumbup Well done, but you must been lucky and got a mentally ill buyer on day release. I sold an X plate low mileage (newer) Nissan Almera for about the same money, and that was 3 years ago!
