TBH they're only at £4kish in the classifieds and he has to make a living
I've had a look - and cars similar to mine are advertised anywhere between £6.5k upwards.

Doesn't mean they are selling though....
what's your spec?
530i Sport. Silver. Alcantara. Manual. Rain sensor. (think this is the only option as Sport spec is high). 73k miles. Immaculate. FBMWSH. Inspection 2 was the last service done.

£3000 is bang on the money in this present climate
How much money do traders expect to make on a car. Looking at autotrader, they would be wanting atleast £3k profit. eek

Straying a bit from topic but I've just walked past one used car lot in town which had everything showing as discounted by £300-£1000!

I'd advise everyone to go out and buy one then, because the E39 530i Sport has turned into the bargain of the century. It really is a great car, it's so solid and is like a new car still, so if I can't sell it for a decent price I will keep it until it falls to bits. I get an average of 30mpg and next year the tax will only be £210 cos it's due in Feb.

Looks like my habit of changing cars all the time has just come to a depressing halt. frown

A3 diesels I would have thought are holding their money relatively well because its well built and thrifty.

I know of 2 certain dealers selling the same used product to the same market and catchment area

one is having to diversify to stay afloat, the other is spouting bks on PH
Thats kinda fits whit what I've been seeing. I picked the wife's car up from its inspection 2 yesterday, and I bumped into a salesman there whom I've known for years. Since I was in the trade in fact (almost 20 years ago) He said it was utterly, utterly dire. Nothing private sales is shifting, and even the company stuff is starting to slow. The worst he's known it in all his time selling, is how he put it. Whats made it worse is it just seems to have happened overnight, no gradual slide off, just like a mass decision to hold onto every penny amongst Joe and Joesephine Public frown

Bargain time for those holding folding it seems.

This is absolutely disgraceful, the country is in big trouble due in part to global influences. The American property fiasco and the price of oil. And this government think up a scheme that intensifies the problems. Bin laden and his pals could not have thought up a better way to fk up the economy. How about doubling stamp duty to help the building trade. rage

This Chancellor appears to think on his feet, without considering the ramifications of his actions, bleeding scary or what !
This Chancellor is not allowed to think. This is classic Gordon Brown, the control freak. After 10yrs of holding the purse strings he simply can't let go. Particularly when it comes to fleecing middle England.

Its a bummer for all in the position of selling so condolences to the OP with what sounds like a lovely car.
I guess the only good news is for buyers. Its a great time to lay your hands on a big engined barge if you dont give a stuff about Gordon and his ongoing gang rape of motorists. If you have something a bit special, there are still some dedicated buyers out there, but many traders I know are struggling to shift anything fruity.

Dealers here in America will try to screw you right up the arse with offers, and most keep a straight face while doing it.

I had to sell my mint condition low mileage G35 for $16,500. Meanwhile it was the most desired color combo and again in MINT MINT MINT condition.

I think what this could do is rejuvenate the values of some pre-2001 cars if people are looking for something with a slightly bigger engine and a bit more oomph.

Check out this 530i on ebay, 2001 on a Y with 117k in mauve. At £4k reserve not met yet, might be worth sticking it on ebay at £3k and see who bites.

Just to add my opinion, been on the market to buy a car for the last 3 months, i'm seeing the same cars on the forcourt, nothing is shifting, anything 2.0L petrol or greater isn't selling, only very small petrol and diesel cars are selling but even then it takes a while.

certainly not a good time to be trying to sell a big engined car. i certainly can't see the market turning around in the short term.

The problem is that a used car is only worth what people are willing to pay for it. I reckon my lovely ST220 is worth next to nothing now, so I'm going to just have to keep it.
