Went to the US earlier in the year and visited a rod shop near Mooresville, North Carolina. I was picking up some bits for a GT40 I am building and got talking to the owner of the shop. He showed me round his place and their was a Roller in the back he was building for an Attorney in Florida. I have a feeling this may have been that car. It was a compete strip and re-build including a complete new suspension fabrication etc etc. The work was fantastic, which if this car is the one shows.

I could see some type of Robbie Coltraine villain driving it in a Bond Film. Also I assume the 592 is cubic inches so thats about 9.5litres - you would need a Bond budget to fill it up.

That said at least they managed to avoid using a Chevy engine...again...

As a turnaround I'd like to see an American muscle car with a Rolls engine in it.
Unlikely to happen as at the end of the day most RR engines are not "performance" engines with a few exceptions, and tuning equipment is not available. Also with all due respect they dont look that good, which is important to the muscle car guys.
A few years ago a guy put a RR V8 into a 32 Ford 3 window coupe hotrod, it was a very nice car and well built, but I have not seen one since.
As for using the Chevy engines, well when you can produce a very reliable 600+ HP for not a silly amount of money you will understand why they are so popular. Also at a recent HP event in the USA one guy managed 2300HP at the rear wheels of his street driven small block chevy powered Chevy Nova, now thats power
Right, so when you walk around the average American weekend car show and see just about everything powered by Chevys (even Fords) you start to get a little tired of it.

Were I rich I'd try and cram a twin-turbo Bentley 6.75 into an AC Ace/Cobra body, just to do it.

Having been a drag racer for a number of years I have never seen a RR engine used in Top Fuel racing. The Hemi in its various forms is the engine of choice. When you think that the top boys get over 6000 HP for these things and are running the quater in under 4 seconds and at over 330 mph, the RR engine does not have anywhere need the ability to put out those kinds of numbers.
As for this RR,I think it is cool. I have also seen this car and you have to see it up close to realise the quality of the work that has gone into it. Its not just an engine and a set of wheels, this car has been totally engineered. Even a RR employee would be impressed by the standard of work as it is of a much higher standard than RR would produce themselves
err, am i missing something, or does that say 330mph?? are you sure you don't mean kph? even so, thats pushing it every so slightly on quarter-mile?

so who built this car then? you seem to have the knowledge...
Yep! the 330mph number is correct, the actual record is 336.15MPH, but I did get the time wrong, I should have said just over 4 seconds. The current record is 4.428 seconds, sorry about that. As for who built the car, I am not sure I'm afraid.
If you look at some of the cars coming out of the top Rod shops in the states at the moment the quality has to be seen to be believed, these are by far the most detailed cars being built in the world at this moment. The top show winners now will cost in excess of a million pounds to build and take up to seven years to construct. A recent example of this was a 1936 Ford built by Chip Foose that won the most sort after award "The Riddler Award" at the Detroit Autorama show. It was more a work of art than an car

A couple of things, yes if you go to an American car show then yes you are going to see mainly Chevys and Fords, but take the time to check out a street rod show and you will find a wide range of engines used as well as Chevys and Fords, you will also see some VW beetles capable of running ten secord quarters on street tyres.
And you hit the nail on the head when you said "Were I rich". Most of these guys are not rich so the Bentley moter is out of the question, also you could still get a hell of a lot more HP out of the Chevy or Ford. Oh and by the way you might have trouble getting that Bentley motor into you Cobra, those things are very big and heavy

Shouldn't that be 'rolls cage'? Sorry.

I would much prefer that if it looked like a normal roller, apart from the engine sticking out of the bonnet of course.

Hehe, it's always nice when someone gets boggled by top fuel stats. 8000bhp, 330mph+ and < 4.5s quarters are where it's at now! Incredible bits of kit when you consider the only electronics they allow are electronic ignition everything else is mechanical or based on simple timers.

Amen to that, how dare a bunch of Hotrodders build the fastest and quickest cars in the world, who the hell do they think they are.....

Actually I think you'll find that the fastest cars in the world http://www.thrustssc.com/ were built in a shed in Farnborough by good old fashioned British tinkerers. smile

Touche! lol

Fastest race cars in the world then. And they're still the fastest accelerating vehicles on the planet bar none (from a standing start).

OK I will give you that, or is it just a jet with wheels?? Some people would argue that that a real land speed record car was a real car, ie one where the wheels are driven, in that case we are back to the Hotrodders

I'm with Streetrod, I think land speed records should be for vehicles with driven wheels.

Otherwise it's simply an exercise in stopping a plane without wings from taking-off.

My thoughts too. The "real" land speed record still belongs to Al Teague's "Spirit of '76" streamliner. It's exceeded 425mph on the measured mile and holds the official wheel-driven record @ 409mph. Powerplant? A single supercharged Hemi; Top Fuel style.

That's the problem with modern England. As soon as we're the best at something, someone has to spoil it by saying it doesn't count. It was built to go the fastest in a straight line just as a top fuel dragster is built to accelerate the quickest in a straight line or an F1 car is built to go round a circuit quicker than anything else or a rally car is the fastest through a forest etc etc. Come on fellas, let's be proud of our achievements! Anyway, what the f@ck has this got to do with a cool as ya like roller? smile

Woah the pony a sec mate, I'm not knocking Thrust SSCs achievements at all, breaking the sound barrier on land is an amazing feat. All I'm saying is, that in my opinion a car is wheel-driven and not propelled by thrust that's all.
