I managed to clip the corner of my hire car today whilst trying to reverse it into an odd space....

The paint has been scraped off on two sepperate spots, both about 1.5" long and 2" appart (Scratches are about 2mm wide) on that corner of the plastic bumper....

I assume if I take the car back to the hire company they will rape me dry for a small fortune to repair it??....

Is it best to just leave it, or should I be looking to get it fixed before the car goes back to the rental company?

Im so angry with myself. If it was my car I would have to live with the minor scratch until such time as a more serious dent occured.....but I dont want to get ripped off by the rental place if they decide to get it fixed

When I picked the car up it already had quite a few similar scratches on other corners of the car...sadly the one I damaged was untouched!

Happened to me once, I was very cross with myself.

Took it back, said nothing, heard nothing smile That was 8 or so years ago now.

Sit tight and wait you've got nothing more to lose

Get some appropriately coloured felt pens and colour it in.

Did it last year and never heard anything back.

some pisshead butted one of the hire cars (hyundai santa fe) we were using as security response vehicles at last weeks oxegen festival in Ireland, dollar rent a car were more interested in the 7 inches of mud and st and didn't seem to notice the smashed passenger window. So the tip is to get it absolutley filthy.

Hope that helps.

LOL...quality video...Couldnt do that in my hire car...the clutch is screwed!......A scratch is more obvious than the damage that would cause!

Park with the damaged side as close to a nearby wall as you can, when you take it back.

Worked for me.

Sounds minor and the hire car place wouldn't get it fixed even if they did try and fleece you.

Lots of mud should do the trick.

So you all think its ok to damage another persons / companies property and then try to cover it up?

How would any of you react if you lent your car to someone, and then found out they had "bodged" or covered up the repair work?

You got the hire car, you signed the agreement, you are liable within the terms of that agreement to make good any damage.

Honestly with all the (mostly justified) chav bashing that goes on round here, its shocking that you are happy to act like them when it suits you.

I'm with TCC above. Just let them know.

Our hire car was keyed in Spain this last summer holiday. We let the hire company know.

Unless you specifically turned down the insurance you are very likely covered for all but the first fifty quid. Chances are they won't even bother with that - we haven't been charged so far.

Not really the same as lending your car to someone, as you're paying for the service. TBH if the companies were that bothered they'd properly check it, so although it's not right to try and conceal it, it's not like they've asked "have you damaged it?" and you saying "no".

Laudable sentiment but most hire companies will go out of their way to 'sell' totally unecessary and overpriced options so they deserve everything they get.

The other year I rented a C Class for a week in Italy. The fast talking rep 'persuaded' me to take full theft cover. After, I calculated it cost me equivalent to over £8000 per year and that they would need 1 in 3 cars stolen to break even on that income if everyone took the cover.

Stuff them. They're devious, why whouldn't we be?
