This is a great article about a car which really is iconic - the last and most powerful of the Neue Klasse cars which saved BMW from going bust. Turbo boost doesn't generally kick in until 3800-4000 rpm so the lag can be a bit of a surprise - but its phenomenal when it does. I've had a turbo for the last 5 years and also just bought a BMW 2002 Alpina A4S. Only a handful of these ever made by Alpina, 165bhp so just less than the turbo but it does have the advantage of the power throughout the range - and no surprises! Pictures of the Alpina and the turbo on Richard Stern's '02 website:

That Alpina is just perfect cloud9

Appologies if I'm rocking the boat here, but I don't like the look of it. I don't this it's gorgeous as the review suggests. Sure the performance, nostalgia and rarity outweigh that to still make it a desirable car, but it's not pretty. Maybe it's because I can't remember it being new on the roads and don't have the emotional attachment to it.

In terms of value - as usual depends on condition but prices on '02s seem to be moving up slowly after many years of doing nothing much! Calassic & Sports Car magazine recently had the turbo in their 'One to watch' section which suggested that very good condition turbos should be fetching £20,000.-
I've seen them advertised between £29,500.- to £15,000.-

Beauty is definately in the eye of the beholder. My wife calls it a 'box on wheels' whereas i think the lines are fantastic. :-)

We have to be honest and say that it looks a bit like an old Lada (or that an old Lada looks like it). It's just the aura that it has that blinds us to the fact. Fantastic car though. One of those and an Alfa GTA please.

I was born '78 so I can't remember them being new on the roads either (E21's are my first recollection) but it's still beautiful in my opinion.

Now, I just need to go and amend my post in the Lottery Garage thread . . . . smile

I had one in 1978 which I bought from Dick Lovett. The turbolag was unbelievable and it had the added benefit of belching flames on the over-run. Drank fuel, but it was a great car which I sold because I feared a very expensive repair bill.

My Dad had a Dolomite Sprint in deep purple and a black vinal roof, nearest he got to getting one of these...He did have an expensive race engine in it, but it always went sideways! This is a beautiful BMW the front scoop is a work of art, and so small if you have ever seen one, tiny by todays standards.

I was born in '87 and I think it looks superb! No modern BMW touches this in terms of coolness or looks, I would imagine its just as if not more exciting then your current M5 or M3 etc...

Love it! why cant they make more like that nowadays?

...Check out the mental (but amusing), bewinged 1977 BMW 2002 Turbo Schnitzer, about 40-45% down the page... The 3.0 CSL has nothing on that bad boy! (or the Audi Quattro Gp.B rally monster for that matter!).

A friend of a friend had a 2002 with an S14 engine from an E30 M3 in it - 200BHP or so.

http://www.m2bmw.com/complete_spec.htm

They did the Cannonball Run in it in 2002 - there's a drive-by from Imola here:

I am very fortunate to own one of these great cars.I bought it for an investment but have fallen in love with it and don't know if I could ever sell it.It is unrestored with the original Windshield still in place.I also own a Porsche 993 Twin Turbo and I have to say I have more fun taking the 02 BMW Turbo out in the twisties more so than the Porsche. It is so light I can just toss it back and forth and like one gentleman said,"If you get it right, you can really drive it fast"

No pics 'cos I'm cack with stuff like that but I was the co-pilot in a BMW 2002 Tii that was 3rd in the locaql classic car rally series in 2006.

http://www.classic-car-rallye-cup.de/Bildergalerie...

It's the black 1, terrible photo but you may be able to make out the box arches - the same as the 1s on this car

The black car has 170bhp, without the turbo.

& no, the damage to front spoiler wasn't a navigational error. 's not my fault the driver thought he could take a short cut through a ditch.
