RE: SOTW: Peugeot 106 GTI
Discussion
I had one back when they were new. It cornered like a kart - probably as well as the lotus 111R I had many years later. Unfortunately it was rather basic, cramped and noisey inside with not a lot of engine torque. The lack of AC was a bit of a shame in boiling traffic too. Still, it was very good fun and not much cash.
Worked for "Puregit" for a few years and didn't have a problem with pedals even with steel to cap rigger boots on.
Be awaire that if yo want to buy a cheep GTI check the rear suspension arm for wear cos if they have gone to far you will need a new back axle.(makes it even more tail happy)!!
Loved this and the AXGT (real fun)

Pity the one in the pic has been spoiled with Saxo VTS wheels.
i may be mistaken but didnt the 106 GTI come with these wheels as standard anyways? Great little cars.. VTS is slightly better tho... interior not so blocky... !
I had a Moonstone coloured 106 GTI and it was the worst car I have ever had, fair enough it went like st of a shovel and handled very well, but I must of had a friday afternoon one as I had nothing but problems with it, when I bought it, it was about 6 months old and still had a long warranty, the peugeot garage I took it too was always ste and always looking to repair (Badly) the problems rather than do the job properly and replace the parts, the gearbox went twice on me in 6 months ( and before I get any smart arse comments it was not my driving that killed the box it just seemed not to be able to take the power.)
But before I had the GTI, I had the best 106 they ever made, a 106 XSI 1600 in black, looked awesome, and seemed bullet proof, never had any problems with it, and as far as I know they were quite rare, this was the one with the colour coded wing mirror covers unlike the 1400 that had boring grey ones.
In my opinion the XSI was far better than the GTI, it was the 8v engine that did it, it had more grunt through the rev range and was more fun to drive than the GTI which had the 16v scream the tits off it engine.
So I am sure I was unlucky with the GTI judging by what everyone seems to be saying about them.
Would I have another one....................... GTI absolutely NOT
............................................... XSI absolutely

As well as a 111r???????????????????? fwd vs rwd no contest as good as i know the 106 is.Great to see these excellent cars finally getting some well deserved kudos.
Had a Rallye from new and all my mates laughed as it had absolutely no toys, they stopped laughing when they simply couldn't keep up.
The lack of toys did wear a bit after a while especially on long journeys and got talked into a GTi.
The article brings back many fond memories, especially the understeer, giving it some round some twisties, a mains had burst on a corner, too late and put it into a hedge. No damage but it was certainly a touching cloth moment. I do remember the GTi being more more fussier on tyres than the Rallye.... The interior wasn't so bad but the seats could be a bit miss or hit and needed constant adjustment especially if the missus had been driving.
As for the pedal box. Size 9, 'H' fitting and no problem here, I imagine it's pretty good for heel-toe but never tried myself.
Put 45,000 on the little Pug in 3 years, never complained or missed a beat. Economical thing too.

Original 106 Rallye was even more hardcore: I had one as a demo in 1994, did 12,000 miles in 6 months in it.
No PAS, ABS, central locking, electric windows, alloys, foglights or sunroof but a 1.3 8-valve that would routinely go to its 7200rpm redline and produced 100BHP. Doesn't sound like a lot today, but it weighed fractionally less than me...
Couldn't hear the radio over 30mph mind.
Almost forgot the white steel wheels!
Loved the GTI Had a few friends with them was going to get one after this but decided against it. Heres my old rallye. I have been a massive fan of all the older hot hatches and owned Renault 5 Turbos, 205 GTIs and the 106 GTI. I've had many M3s which have always brought a smile to my face for straight line power however the 106 GTI is just great fun to drive in all conditions and very cheap to run!
Yes the pedals are close together but I have never found it a major problem and you soon adapt (I am 6 foot 2 with a 10.5 shoe size).
There are far too many examples out there that have been played with. I don't understand why some people expect to improve the handling by fitting a pair of £50.00 springs after Peugeot invested millions of £s in R&D, if you ask me “Leave it alone!!”
If anyone is interested I am selling one of my GTIs which is a great example! Please see link:-

These were the optional alloys on my 1999 106 Gti. As you can see french quality resulted in them peeling..... I miss this car but it required so much looking after it failed the emissions on its first, 2nd and third MOT resulting in new lambda sensors and then a head gasket it just had to go for £1K two years ago needing a new gearbox after 6 years of abuse.
This car also beat the original S1 Elise for handling on a Top Gear/Jer Clarkson program when it first came out. Came second to a 550

I love the 106 GTi. I had a 1.3 Rallye followed by a 1.6 XSi (which i later stuck a 16v engine in). Sold that back in 2003, but thankfully a couple of years later my girlfriend bought a black '02 GTi and insured me on it. So very different from my BMW, particularly now she has a Peugeot Sport exhaust system and a few other choice parts on there.
