If you want to lose an afternoon check out the gallery on Garage Journal, before you know it you'll be planning a 6000 sq ft hanger.. :-)

That said, if you want inspiration for a two-car garage take a look at the 12 gauge garage.

Indeed, but it was a few pages back and is always worth another look. smile
Thanks. I follow this thread for ideas.

And if I'm remembering right, it was some criticism from this board that played a role in my finding a different lightweight solution for my car's rear tail lights. Here are the old ones, modeled after the late-1960s 911R. (Never mind the owner and his Irish beer.)

I recently switched to regular lenses, but with some very lightweight (home-made) boxes and LED bulbs in place of the heavy factory originals.

Nicely done - do you get the light you need for reversing with the LEDs?

What I really like about your garage Jack is the total absence of any non-car clutter. Unlike mine where I have decorating tools, paint tins, and various other crap. Presumably you have another shed for all that stuff?

Is there a separate thread anywhere about your car? Absolutely love the look of it!

One key morning in the birth of my garage came when I got a gift card in the mail for a big-box hardware and lumber store. I took out a piece of graph paper and drew a quick design for a storage shed. The two curves of the two roofs correspond to a dinner plate and a smaller dessert plate that were on the table at the time.

Oddly, the shed is a slightly-different shade of green than the garage interior.

Thank you. There's a build thread here.

But there's a six-minute video coming pretty soon from the German magazine Auto Bild that's (in my very biased opinion) a pretty awesome look at my car and just about everything you woud want to know about it -- including footage on the track as I break my previous-best record at Willow Springs Raceway. I'll post a link when it comes out. Who knows, it might have a shot at the time-for-tea slot?

Jack Olsen is a hard act to follow, but I am finalising the plans for my garage build, so thought I'd run the specs past the PH garage fans to see if there's anything I've missed. I'm revisiting this thread, but only got through the first 75 pages - not even half way!

The plan is for a large single garage to the back of my house - Brick built, 4m x 5.5m, 2.5m high with flat roof (torch on felt), 10' Hormann sectional door with automatic opener, window on wall facing house and personnel door on the side. The garage door and electrics are being sorted out after the build. Like Jack's garage it is going to be for car stuff only, gardening equipment and anything the missus wants to store is going in the shed!

Have I missed anything obvious from the spec that I should have sorted at the build stage?

Most roofers seem to be recommending GRP these days.

It looks like quite a large single garage, great for DIY and storage - how about planning in some storage cabinets and worktops

Dont use a flat roof they ALWAYS end up causing grief. Even if you have a single slope, rather than a pitch, if you are building from scratch, just dont have a flat roof!

Flat roofs are to be avoided if at all possible.

I've seen pros & cons for both - "Roofer" on here suggested felt was a better bet.

I've already been looking at garage pride, but I think that will be phase 2/3 as budget is already being stretched with build. So floor tiles, insulation & cabinets will have to wait. The plan is to refurbish existing cabinet & workbench for now, then replace after floors has been laid & ceiling insulated & boarded.

As a side question, has anybody insulated & boarded a garage ceiling with hardware for sectional door in place?

It will have a slight fall front to back, unfortunately I can't go above 2.5m height due to the garage being within 1m of my boundary - so a pitched roof is out.

put in a planning application then, if it is thrown out, then come back to us with a valid excuse for having a flat roof ;-)

See how much it will cost to fibre glass it. Might cost a few quid more, but will save you hassle in the long run, anything flat(ish) is a guaranteed pain in the backside. After years of patching and faffing around with a flat roof, I finally fibre coated it, and so far no problems.

I've had a look at fibreglass and that seems to have problems of its own. A well laid felt roof with a slight slope should be fine for many years.

The plan is that my existing garage will be pulled down over the weekend to make way for the new one - watch this space!

Finally finished catching up with this thread, I hope to have my garage on here in a few months - my old wooden garage has been pulled down and the build on the new on is starting is starting in June.

New house ... New project smile
Made some progress on garage:
-plaster boarded the roof
-boarded the loft
-added down lighters
-tiled the floor
-some old kitchen cupboards, painted black (in the corner)

all in about £300, the tiles are wickes cheapest, but good, have jacked up a car on them already with no issues

a nice clean dust free, and warmer garage for projects

Did you plasterboard the ceiling before all the door mechanisms were fitted? I'm trying to work out if I can wait until after the door is fitted to board the ceiling on mine.
