Now I like the sound of this, the kind of thing I could move up to at some point. Is it chargecooled? Looks like it is to me.

The steering wheel looks absolutely terrible though!

Would it be possible to have that first picture in a higher resolution, or - 1024x768?

I know its a bit sad but this sort of thing annoys me slightly on a car forum, why would the wastegate make a noise....why do so many people get this wrong.

I seriously doubt that he is talking about an external wastegate, so the noise will just be the dump valve/diverter valve, whatever you want to call it, you would think as a car journalist you would know this...
The car runs an external wastegate so yes Oli is right
What that vents by your ear!! It would more than likely exit with the exhaust so why would you hear it??

I am pretty sure it is illegal to have an external wastegate, plus you would only hear it when on boost and it would just sound like an unsilenced exhaust which is not at all what it sounds like he is describing.

Yes I am being pedantic, I know...

Oli, from the sound of it you were a bit scared... always going on about how small and light and twitchy it is...

I've liked the look of these for a while, myself smile

Audi TT meets Lamborghini meets Lotus Elise meets Ka.

Still quite nice, though. Best of luck to them.

I must be mistaken?? Did I actually just see that you wrote it had too much power?!

What are you gay? wink

Sorry I don't mean to offend but I've been waiting my whole life for manufacturers to stop building cars that look sporty but have tiny engines (ala Audi TT) or perfecting an excellent light weight chassis and then putting a 190hp engine in it (ala Lotus).

Whenever someone actually builds a seriously fast car that’s affordable people say its too much power for the car!! Why? It’s only as fast as you want it to be, you control the throttle? What about people like me who love power and are totally addicted to the feeling of being pinned to the seat every time you touch the throttle? Right now if you’re a power addict you have to:

a) Have £100k plus to spend

b) Buy an old car that’s fast but has been abused its whole life and costs thousands in repair bills

c) Modify a car (money pit) and make it fast at the expense of reliability because no one can build a fast car like something that was designed to be fast from the factory.

My Z4M is the fastest thing for sub £30k that I could buy to drive to work every day, if more people started building silly fast versions of their regular cars like and Audi TT 3.2 turbo or a Lotus Exige with 400hp the world would be a better place!

I'll climb down off my soap box now.

Regards,

Ben

What? External wastegates do make noise when it comes on boost, as its got to divert the extra exhaust gases so it doesnt overboost. Dump valves only sound off when you come off the throttle.

edit: also, why would external wastegates be illegal?

I know what an external wastegate does, my point is that unless it is external i.e unsilenced you wont hear it over the noise of the engine/exhaust as it will be on boost. I thought that the article was talking about the noise being when you come on and off the throttle.

Maybe I have it wrong and maybe it does run an external wastegate but that isn't how it sounded.

It is illegal as I always 'thought' that unsilenced exhausts are illegal and wouldnt pass an MOT, and a wastegate is acting as an unsilenced exhaust if it is external. I know people who run them and have been failed on MOT's.

Anyway this really isn't relevant and I really like the car BTW....

Eta - just re-read the article, wastegates don't go woosh shh wooosh, there is a reason why external ones are known as 'screamer' pipes, so I stick by my original point.

an external wastegate can be run either unsilenced straight to air or reciculated back into the exhaust system.

Must agree with nifty.
I think this is the perfect tonic to the 200mph 500+hp saloons and estates that we are used to (not that i have anything against those - i'd love one) and those underpowered sporty numbers that look ok but do Jack (and get overtaken by Big German TDis and overpowered SUVs).
This is a new kind of sleeper. A cute and innocent little sportscar that looks like its got a small fizzy engine but has got much much more. And more besides

Ok ive seen everything. Now bring on a 500hp 200mph car that peasants like me can afford to buy and run, where my family can fit in, I can use everyday and pass unnoticed. Anyone?

There are plenty of Elises around running 330ish bhp from supercharged Honda K20 engines but many of their owners don't seem to end up keeping them very long. I know of some who have switched back to standard Elises and been happier with them; maybe it is possible for a car to be too fast for the public road.

If it's a wastegate I'll eat a newly purchased pirate hat + parrot.

I think my £5 goes on an atmospheric dump valve and the wastegate thing is well fast innit street BS.

It is wastegate chatter not an atmos dump valve. I can tell you for a fact the car does not run a vent to atmos dump valve
