Is it just me, or does that turbo look a little small to have come from an 80's F1 car?

Chris.
I'm wondering whether these engines have been engineered so that the current owners can use them for racing and circuit driving (track days doesn't really seem the right term), and therefore the turbo's have been altered for better and smoother reponse rather than ultimate power. I seem to recall that these engines were generally thought to be really laggy when they were raced.

Not a V engine, but this BMW Megatron engine appears to have a big snail

Conversely, these shots appear to sport small turbos too

Does modern engine management, ignition, cam control, and turbo component material technology allow the use of larger turbos without the problems that occurred in the early days? - Speculation on my part.

mat205125 turbo tech has come on one hell of a long way since the 80's! even just the tuirbine blades are soo much more efficent these days. its not so much materials as the shape of them...

and engiens have come on leaps and bounds to! even all out race engines, and not a million miles away form them, offer amazing responce for their size and the power they can make.

there was a disscusion about turbochaging a TVR AJP V8 on this forum (engine section i think) and one guy said run 8.0-1 MAX if you plan on running over 10psi of boost! and it just rubbish! you can get away with soo much more with modern design of engiens and compnents.

i read an mag about a US company called Nelson racing engines (goolge them and you will see what they can build! wink ). he has been building race small and big block Chevies for tyears and many twin turbos units. in the report he says once you get the timing right, making power is easy. and thats just it. with moderen ECU's its soo easy to fine tune an engines to make the most out of everything. smile

Am I the only one disappointed to find that it's only the turbo from an F1 engine?

I was kind of hoping it had a Honda V6 Turbo / BMW 4-pot turbo or similar with anything up to 1200bhp.
No, you're not.
+1

That's only because of the title though. It's still an incredible machine and an impressive achievement.

It's hard to imagine 400bhp in a car that size. Something with three times that (on boost) would be utterly undriveable I suspect. So, on the whole I'm quite glad it 'just' has a 'busa turbo. biggrin

Since this is a Geoff Page appreciation thread, I'd thought I'd chip in.

The guys a legend in RS200 circles. He's always been around the periphery of freaky engines with F1 bits added, one off whacky monster powered specials, and Group B cars. Very handy bloke to know.

He used to look after my old RS200 Evolution back in the day. I owned it from 1992 through to 2002. Had no intention of selling it until I took I was invited to some Ford Owners Silverstone Track to drive it around the circuit with the wick turned up and demo it to the crows blah blah. At the time the engine had a obviously genuine 580bhp, geared for about 160mph in 5th, and it really flew. Remember these things were 4wd and weighted only 1000kg or so. Missile would be an understatement. Best lap I ever did around the grand prix circuit was 1min 55sec's … which was about 25secs behind contemporary F1's IIRC, and this was a car I drove home afterwards ! The suspension was remarkably compliant and supple, but the engine and box were brutal. Driving one was a real fix, and as good as a workout. Ahh, them were the days !

It was bought by an American bloke who walked out the crowd into the paddock area, and offered me a stupid amount of cash for it. Turns out he had just sold a gazzillion shares in a dot.com float, but he really had no fking idea what he was buying and more or less destroyed the engine within days of ownership.

I've included a few pics below, and a scan of a 'forgotten' 1986 Autocar 'road test' on an RS200 driven by a certain Stiq Blomqvist. Subject car was only 420bhp , and low geared, but it recorded a best 0-60 of 2.6s, 0-100mph in 7.1s. And this was 1986. Obviously things have come on a long way since then, but I take my hat of to the Group B drivers who would pilot these machines up Pikes Peak or through icy forest stages on the 1980's RAC rallies with rigid trees and rocks inches to each side. These guys made F1 drivers look like safety conscious pussies ...

The inboard shocks are a optional extra on the M.C rush but this is the first one.
