RE: New '914' Mooted In VW-Porsche Plans
Discussion
ahh i dunno ....
whats wrong with a track focused minimalist elise challenger from porsche ...
Porsche is a "growing up" experiance so why not have something at the cheap but hard end of the market ??
A lot of elise / caterham owners seem to evolve into porker teritory as they get older / more afluent, so why not catch them in the brand earlier!!!
If it works, goes and handles like the current range then good luck to them!!

Like everyone else is saying, if they did make a light, mid-engined, cheap porsche my name would be on the order list! providing it looks good and goes well.
indeed, cheap porsches has always been a succes, like the 944 and 928 :P If they want to seperate it from the boxter but dont want to go the boring VAG turbo route then how about using a version of the VR5 engine with some Porsche tuning on it, 200bhp and a bit of character.
I dont have a problem with parts sharing on the cheaper models, after all its in the history.

On the contrary to all negative comments! The styling of the VW is the best looking VW concept possibly ever and a Porsche version which can only be better tweaked and engineered but will probably have a puny engine and soon get a terrible reputation would make the ultimate Q-car with a 997 Gt3 engine or silimar dropped into it.
I eagerly await the RUF engine options on this car.. could be the modern equivilent to the 944 turbo which everyone seems to think has a VW van engine until its heading over the horizon leaving them in a cloud of grit and tyresmoke!

How much slower can a Boxster get before it's slower than a GTi?
Porsche Boxster 2.7
245 bhp
0-62 mph 6.1 sec
Golf GTi
197 bhp
0-60mph 6.7 sec
You could at least quote like for like performance figures....Porsche Boxster 2.7
245 bhp
0-62 mph 6.1 sec
Golf GTi
197 bhp
0-60mph 6.7 sec
IIRC Golf ~140mph Boxster ~160mph.
SS7
PS Boxster 0-60 ~5.7secs, and its about to get a 2.9l engine upgrade

Hi time they go again for something light and fun, instead of their current oh-so-perfect line-up of boring cars on one hand and deep pocket racing cars.
914 was actually a very competent car and was only killed off by the snobbery of people who think a Porsche muts look like a 911. Same for the 928...good car...
Ah, please Porsche: do it, a nice small light Elise and MK5 beater ... anyone is free to have then a GT3 engine dropped in if they need to have it...

Well I for one hope they make it and keep some original styling cues. 2000 lbs 300 hp and I will lay down the cash right now.
And you'd like it to be safe and meet current emissions targets? I could care less about emissions.

No, the 914 was killed off because it was too expensive (a 914/6 was more expensive than a 911T). This was because the original deal with VW to build the bodies was based on a handshake. A subsequent change of senior management at VW bought in a CEO who significantly upped the price Porsche were paying for bodies.
