Fair enough. The 8v is a great lump though. Bombprooof, the heads last longer than the 16v whose valve guides wear quicker and you don’t have to rag the nuts of it to make any meaningful progress

Good buy if it works! I've seen these still going for silly money. Would make a wicked track car!

Last (recorded) keeper change was in 2002 and the guy before that had it 14 months which sounds good. However I'd be very surprised if someone who had owned their car for the last 6 years would sell it in that manner. Did you ever see the address where the car was registered?

My money's on it being bought by someone, driven with no licence/insurance without registering it in their ownership and then selling it on. It comes up as unininsured on the MID too which backs up that story.
I guess that would explain the cheap price and dodgey dealings!! However it also explains that the car has probably had the b0ll0x ragged out of it for the last 6 years!!

Is it not possible the guy was seriously strapped for cash so needed to sell fast?
Hence the lack of petrol... confused

Equally it could be dodgy cry

I'm in this camp to.

HPI isn't all it's cracked up to be and that selling scenario sounds dodgier than a box of three-legged Frech frogs that happen to have rabies.

You'd get £200 just for weighing it in. So why bother to Gumtree it?

Dodgy indeed.

Dear PH,

I am looking to buy a Mk2 16V Golf for track day fun, all I want is a solid car with a good engine and I can sort the rest. How much do you want for this?

Not sure about his summary of the 8v being rubbish. The 8v engine is torquier and more tractable for most driving than the 16v

My favourite car of all time! I love the way they look, I love the way they drive, I pretty much love everything about these cars.

Here is a pic of mine [which is currently for sale by the way - I've stepped up to an Integra Type-R now]...it's only got 77k miles on the clock! http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/688440.htm

Turn it into a track car, I say turn it to a track car!

If it's the real deal that's a bargain. I used to have one on the road, and then tripped it, added a cage, upped the brakes and suspension (just a little) and it was great fun. A bit of a cliche^, but it really did embarass some decent cars. I did push it quite hard though, and nothing broke, a real testiment to the build quality.

Not shy of cocking an inside real wheel either:

Its not a big bumper golf. It HAS big bumpers, but were fitted later on in the cars life, sorry lads!
I didn't know that, I thought all 16v could be spec'd with big bumpers? Either way it's stanadard VW parts. An E36 325 coupe fitted with the standard M-tech bumpers will fetch more than the standard bumper model whether it came like that from the factory or retro-fitted. Well I wouldn't be fussed anyway as long as the finish was good.

A black, Mk2 GTI, 3 door has got to be worth £1k all day long. If this car were not flashed infront of our eyes as costing £250 it could have been cleaned up and put up for sale for £1500 with a different exhaust and some 15" BBS wheels.

£250? There has to be something wrong here. We should have a sweepstake; I call 'accident damaged and bodged back together'.

I have to say I'd never buy off Gum Tree but I have bought and sold on Ebay...

Hopefully it isn't dodgy as PH would be in trouble if selling on
