What floats along and is virtually silent inside - possibly a Lexus, Maybach, Merc S class?

I had a run of mill 406 saloon once and that had a great ride and was really quite inside - when making phone calls people at the other end often thought I was at home or work smile

I've been in some of the current E class Mercs and I was surprised at how much road noise was evident inside.

What have you driven that sent your passengers to sleep? wink

My boss's last gen BMW 5 series, on non-bling wheels. For a week I had to travel each day in the back of it to go to a show at the NEC. I didn't stay awake once.

My recently purchased 1999 E39 528i Auto is so nice to drive, and apparently very nice for the passengers. It just seems to glide around with very little effort required, and when you do want to go fast it still retains a very comfortable ride. I love it, no regrets even if it does like a drink!

I have driven the old 750iL circa 1991 vintage and that was very smooth and quiet and the torque was amazing!

The E39 is very quiet and solid, I remember my old E34's were pretty good too.

When I get round to replacing the 528 in 2 or 3 years maybe, I am hoping for a late E38 740 or 750i if I'm on a bit more money then. Gorgeous carscloud9

I cannot really understand this new trend for run-flat tyres and sportiness on luxury cars. It completely defeats the whole p[oint of them to me as the noise and comfort are so poor.

yes My boss used to make this very point and his Honda Legend, on fat tyres, was the most comfortable car I've ever been in.

Driven them all. Merc S320/500/600/55/63, Merc CLS 320/55/63, BMW 730D/730LD/745Li, Lexus LS600, Maybach 57, Range Rover Vogue TD6/TDV8/4.4/4.2 SC, Bentley Continental GT/Flying Spur, Arnage 4.4/6.75/Turbo Mulliner etc etc and the best without a shadow of a doubt for effortless wafting is definitely the Rolls Royce Phantom saloon. (Not the Drophead coupe though - thats more focused and stiffer)You cant hear the engine, the steering is light but not too light, the seats are extremely comfotable and build quality is bullet proof, everything is hidden away out of sight and they are amusingly rapid in a straight line....

Pleanty of other cars have more toys etc (S Class and Maybach in particular) but they are nowhere near as special a place to be. All in my opinion of course!!

Good call on the Citroen C6.

My old boss yrs ago had a 1985 Daimler and I went with him to a couple of sites and that car was beautifully refined - like a magic carpet!

Not sure of the model now as I saw it as an old chaps car in those days wink

Rolls Royce Phantom. But that's probably cheating.
In terms of "real world" cars, dad's old BMW 520i was excellent.
