One would first think of this;

and of course later this;

a little later you would think of this;

But you may have forgotten about this little masterpiece;

130 bhp at a screaming 6800 rpm in a little 3dr hatch that weighed in at about 900kg

What a great un-appreciated car.

No real reason for this post, just sitting here wishfully thinking of adding another car to the mix - really any of those would do. Yes, a hot hatch...mmmmmmm

Brill little cars. My dad borrowed a few back when he worked for Honda a long time ago.

6800rpm? pffft! A mate of mine had an '85 Civic Si which was quite happy to wind out to 8000. Before the days of Vtec but 1.6 DOHC 16v, not sure how much power it had but it really went very well. 900kg or so iirc, gripped well but handling was nothing special.

'Hatch' is exactly what the XR3 / XR3i was confused Like it or not, it was an iconic car of the 80's.

Nice, having spent a fair bit of time in one 8k does not surprise.

BTW - can't see that pic on this 'work' laptop - presume you mean this though?

Good fun too but not quite as manic I found..

I would think nothing of the sort, the Golf is a car from the 70s not the 80s.

I'd also think XR2!

Yup thats the shape, checked up on it and it was the JDM spec Si with 130bhp, can be identified by a rectangular bulge in the bonnet which lesser versions didnt have.

Apparently the US-spec 91bhp Si did 0-60 in under 9 seconds so its no wonder the 130bhp version seems pretty quick for a Civic!

Dirt cheap now actually, would make a bargain track-sg for someone who likes FWD.

I had an XR3 back in the Eighties, the handling was ok but other than that it was crap

after that I got a Corolla GTI 16v which was largely ignored at the time but had a great chassis, fantastic 1600cc engine that would quite happily go above 8000 rpm all day long, was fast, comfortble, very well equiped and being a toyota extremely reliable.

It's biggest let down was the steering which was an absolute disaster,it was far too light and sometimes even quite scary
I think if anything could have been done to improve it's steering it could have been one of the best hot hatches available
