Oh and if we are talking LATE Eighties you can't beat a small bumper Mk2:

Preferable to the later big bumpers imho:
I dunno. I have a soft spot for a nice big bumpered Mk2, preferably in oak green.

sorry for dragging up an old thread but found this clip which will be of interest to anyone else who has fond memories of the Strada Abarth 130TC.

This video clip follows them racing in the production saloon series where racing together you had Golf Gti, Strada, Astra GTE, Delta Gt, Corolla Ae86, Nova Sport, Diahatsu turbo, Starion, Rover, Capri, Mercedes Cosworth, Monza - all racing together with no engine mods allowed pretty much road cars with uprated shocks and roll cages.

Why is it always that fricking golf that gets shown in reviews and TV features when a Mk1 is called for. Surely there must be enough genuine standard golfs about without having to show that car with its wrong wheels in the wrong colour, and that god-awful aftermarket bodykit.

This isn't a rant at the OP, rather an observation. I'm betting that it belongs to the cheif anorak of the golf owners club or something.

THIS is what a Mk1 golf should be (even if it is a later 1.8 campaign - waits to be corrected nerd )

That particular Golf Gti belongs to VAG UK

i had a gordini turbo! electric blue one, Y reg.

THEORETICALLY it's one of the few cars back then that had the potential to get away from traffic cars. very, very underrated.

As a ford lover in the extream i have to say the xr3i was never in the same leage as the golf and 205, it was competitor yes but way behind, now the RS turbo had the power to fight them if not the handling.
As i say i say that as a ford lover to the max (2 Mk4 escorts, 2 sierras and 2 cortinas on the road at the mo) i am however also a realist.

Some that I owned.

One of the fastest of the non-rally derived cars. 160 bhp, 1050kgs, 0-60 7.5s, 135+mph. Excellent.
If I had the room I would have one of these in a heartbeat. One of the best looking "square" cars designed by a ruler and just lovely.

I had one of these for three years, it was an amazing little car. Panels were like tin foil. It broke down loads, but was so light in the corners, think I span it more than once. Miss that loony little thing.

997cc on the logbook. 3 pot turbo.

Also had one these for about 5 years. Totally orginal and much fun...

well put. the rs turbo was a pretty quick car for it's time and group, but the xr3i was a little flat as a performer. it was always more of a compromise, offering the styling without the performance.

little known fact, the fastest european performer ford offered until the sierra cosworth came out was still the 4 speed 2.8i capri (by their own figures) until the cosworth was launched. just don't ask one to go round corners or brake efficiently.
