We had 2 at one point.

I had a 1991 16v Boxer edition Cloverleaf.

Mrs 75 had a 1.7iE, also a 1991.

By pure coincidence, they both had registrations starting 'H282' and both were the same colour.

This would be my first port of call for an 80s hot hatch:

I just like the fact that it's only recently that we've started to get hot hatches as quick as this. And even now the only one that will match it 0-60 wise is the Audi S3 (I think...)

You could almost class the old Subaru Leone coupe as a 'hot hatch' hehe 1100kg 1.8 turbo, dual-range 4wd with switchable difflock.

My first car was the wagon version, though mine was the gutless non-turbo a bit like this:

Truly 80s-tastic biggrin

How about the fastest of all posted so far (it was when I started to type this post):

Not usually remembered unless you've been thoroughly thrashed by one.

From Nipponautomotive.co.uk
...the GTti coming into play during 1987 and stopping production in 1994. You may think the 1.0L 3-Cylinder engine is nothing exciting. Think Again. Turbo aspiration, 800kg curb weight, 100BHP and DOHC means one thing: the fastest 1 litre production car ever made.

The Charade Gtti is still the fastest 1 litre production car made and was the first car to achieve 100BHP per litre. It has a 0-60mph time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 115mph. Although modified versions have been known to do 0-60 in less than 5 seconds! You'll be able to surprise a few people at the lights, considering the car doesn't look too mean.

Wouldn't say an XR3i counts, but an RS1600i ? Oh yes

Been thinking of making a similar topic for a while now, In relation to the 4th gen honda's, why not have a B16a1 engine with 160bhp at 8200rpm in an ee/ef9?

I think late 80's/early 90's hot honda's epitomise hot hatches, lightweight, small engined cars that punch well above their weight, even today my eg6 (5th gen honda civic with B16a2 vtec engine) causes concern for the performance of modern, larger engined cars

scratchchin A lad in an EG Civic VTi (maybe VTiR) (with lexarse lights, big shiny wheels etc) decided to have a drag off the lights against my old '90 2.0NA Legacy wagon once.

No hard launch, both got rolling slowly and then hit it, even with 3 people in the Legacy it was dead even. Thought a VTi might have been quicker than that but apparently it not. 130bhp (compared to 150 in the Legacy) but I guess the lack of torque made up for the lack of weight.

When someone says "hot hatch" I don't particularly associate it with cars that handled well or went particularly fast, just a smallish family car which the manufacturers bunged a slightly bigger engine in, plonked in some seats that looked vaguely like Recaros and a body kit. The XR3i was pretty close to the standard Escort really, and not much more than luke warm. This was much hotter:

My favourite runner up is the Citroen AX GT.

You'd be surprised at the number of car journalists who actually rate this as their favourite 80s hot hatch. James May for starters actually rated it as the only perfect car he's ever driven in a column a few months ago. I had one as my first car and absolutely loved it. The handling was utterly sublime.

Why is it always that fricking golf that gets shown in reviews and TV features when a Mk1 is called for. Surely there must be enough genuine standard golfs about without having to show that car with its wrong wheels in the wrong colour, and that god-awful aftermarket bodykit.

This isn't a rant at the OP, rather an observation. I'm betting that it belongs to the cheif anorak of the golf owners club or something.

THIS is what a Mk1 golf should be (even if it is a later 1.8 campaign - waits to be corrected nerd )

That would be my choice aswell! Never actually seen one on the roads but I still think of them as the ultimate hot hatch.

Hot hatch? 80's?

Although the 205 1.9 was a nice looking car (Never drove one so cannot comment).
Spot on! When it came to 80's hot hatches, I couldn't see past that little cracker and managed to buy one ton replace my Scirocco GTi. Great car! The 205 was a girl's car.
