Was it John Pye who rallied a V8 Manta back in the 80's or 90's
Superb, especially on tarmac (Albemarle Barracks) against a V8 Chevette
3 wheeling was the name of the game

Always thought the Manta looked better than the Cavalier Mk 1 that I aquired off the FIL. Changing a front spring nearly removed a thumb and was never a fan of Vauxhall much after that

I had a 78 1.9 Berlinetta Coupe, great car except the rear side windows would stick out like a pair of wings over 55mph.
BNG 709T I think.

It's such a shame there was never a 6-pot version.
There was...but genuine i300s are extremely rare
Wasn't the i240 a 6-pot too?
No, all the i models were four bangers (I can't honestly recall the i300 without looking).

The inline six modded ones I've driven have plough-on understeer like you never thought possible. Sound great, handle hopelessly.
All Mantas were indeed 4 cylinders...

That being said, used to race a Manta with 3.0 liter from a Carlton, but it did indeed understeer heavily. Great car to drift though, once you got it going biggrin

Ended up breaking the car, when a wheel nut broke, and the wheel went through the bodyshell...
According to owners club, only one i300 in RHD from Irmscher

Opel Manta B series (1981-88) Irmscher i300 by Paul Brennecker

Overview

The i300 was produced during 1985 and 1986 along side the i200 and i240, It was fitted with the straight 6, 3.0 litre engine taken from the larger Opel models such as the Omega. Once again the Manta 400 Rally car quad Halogen headlamps and boot spoiler were used. The standard suspension was extensively modified to accept the heavier engine. As per the i240, the standard front brakes were replaced by vented discs with bigger calipers, and a Limited Slip Differential was also fitted.

The i300 Interior, followed on with the traditional Irmscher theme using Recaro seats with the same black 'Opel Sport' cloth as featured in the other models.Generally the coupe bodystyle was left unaltered, making the i300 visually similar to a standard GT/E. The performance of this model however was exceptional, with 177 bhp on tap in standard tune. Many tuning options were available to order, which could increase power output to over 200 bhp. Once again the methods of identification are similar to the i200 and the i240.

The i300 was available at the same time as the other Irmscher offerings but due to the fact that it was almost double the list price of a standard GT/E it only sold in small numbers. It is believed that only 1 RHD i300 was imported via the UK franchise, even on the continent it was an exceptionally rare model.

Interestingly the car also came fitted with ‘bronze tinted glass’, which is more than could be said for other cars in this segment (or in any segment for that matter).
I think my Metro Turbo had bronze tinted glass.

As a former owner of both a 2.0 manta exclusive and a 2.8 capri, I always thought as a boy , the manta as the lesser one, but when i bought the Manta after a capri still aged only 18, I found my dreams further shattered. Not only was the Capri a dissapointment but it handled crap compared to my manta and was only slightly faster, even with the head gasket had gone on the Manta a great time was had.

Great cars under rated

Wow that brings back memories!!

I had a 1984 (B-Reg) Opel Manta GTE Coupe (B550 GSX). It was white with the white wheels and the brown/yellow checked 'Recaro' interior!

I bought it when I first left college before joining the Army. My mate (who had a white B-Reg XR2) and I used to tear around North Tyneside in them!

I sold mine to a used car dealer in Watford Herts, shortly before I went overseas with the Army.

Happy memories of one of the first cars I owned!!

Kadett GT/E in the background, same injection engine as the Manta but lighter, smaller and with an LSD as standard. Only ever seen 3 on the road and one of those was mine.

I had a 2.0 gls '78 Cavalier Coupe. Bought it from my uncle who used to work for vauxhall. Turns out it used to be a press car before he bought it. So, prob well and truly thrashed in the 1st 10k miles. I picked it up 11 years old with 80k on the clock then put 40k miles on it in two years. Brilliant driving position. I replaced the springs with stock ones, but it was far too high. The rear diff was whining. I should have replaced teh diff. But, I swapped it + cash for a 2.8 Capri that turned out to be so bent it was good at turning corners whilst pointing straight.

Anyway, next up was an 86 GTE 2.0 coupe. 1 owner. 10 year old with 90k miles. I put 40k on that as well. But also lowered it and added the obligitory large bore exhaust and KnN induction. Brilliant drivers car. Washed and waxed most weekends (sado).

They definately needed lowering.

So hands up all the old (current?) OMOC members posted here?

I used to turn up at Uxbridge. Went up to Santa Pod once - completely brilliant fun - and along to one of the Taunton? park shows. Must have been mid 90s.

Once did SW London to Glasgow at triple leptons the whole way.

Talking of Mantas with something other than 4-pot engines, I saw this one on the Rockingham Stages rally last year that was running a 4.0 litre Jaguar lump!

I drive a manta everyday of the week to and from work, and sell cars for a living and there's nothing better than sliding sideways about 100 yards up the road and watching the faces of people when the beast coming towards them. Manta's rule for value for money what can you buy that looks and drives so good. Manta 400 and a ascona 400s are the kings of the road. check my profile picture for a real car!

My very first car was a Metallic brown 1.8 Berlinnetta. Replaced that with a White D Reg GT/E Coupe. Had that from 1994 through to 2001. Rust was a major problem though, the floor pans rotted through completely. Had a lot of work done to it them sold it. New owner has done some mods to it, sadly doen't look as nice as when I had it, and was virtually original spec frown

I was a joint area rep for the OMOC in the late 1990's early 2000s.

We did quite a few meets at local pubs, Rollerbowl in Collier Row, did a couple at Lydden Hill race circuit and once went in a convoy of 4 cars ( White A Series, Red Exclusive, Blue Exclusive and my GT/E) up to Chatsworth House for the German car Show in 1997.

Happy days smile

Part of me now wishes I had kept it and totally restored it, as virtually all are now compelte rot boxes or are heavily (and sometimes quite badly) modified.

2 times OMOC member (membership number 413 twice), had good fun and enjoyed these cars. Easy to work on, but my last one did start to rust around the usual places.

Had a 1983 1.8S Berlinetta Hatchback and a 1988 2.0 GTE Exclusive Coupe.
