Oh my god, what a gutless piece of crap this car really is...

Its slower than the old shape 1.4 Astra as verified by a few experiments conducted earlier on.

10 seconds + to 60mph - what is that about in a modern car? Surely there cant be that many cars these days, with the exception of the little kia type things that take this long? There is no pull in any gear, 6th gear at 70 on a straight motorway, plant your foot and it literally doesnt accelerate.

Im gobsmacked at why people would pay just short of 20k for this thing.

Im a BMW fan, but this is just one terrible car.

I literally cant think of one redeeming feature of this car.

I delivered one of those once. The guy had borrowed our demo 120d, and on the strength of that ordered a 116i with Sport (i.e. rock-hard) suspension.
He gave me a lift to the station, and by the time we got there he was almost in tears.

This one is an SE - they gave it to me to use while the Z4 is being sorted. Not that I have bothered much.

Agree actually about the seats, quite smooth a drive, but thats comparing it to a Z4 with the M Sport suspension and a 1 series coupe M Sport - both with run flats. This 116 for some reason has no run flats.

I just cant get over how irritating it is to drive.

This does not surprise me one little bit.

The 1 series...

Well, the coupe, in M sport 125, 135, or 123d spec does have appeal. I know they are expensive, small and not that practical but I like them.

But a 116i (BMW has them listed at £16,500) is just daft. Focus, Golf, or public transport please.

Its comically underpowered. When you give it some (which you always need too) it also gets shocking mpg.

Probably why there are thousands of brand new ones sitting on airfields in the UK.

Howcome its so slow? I used to drive a Corolla 1.6vvti for work which has pretty similar performance on paper but i actually thought was rather quick. Sure its not the fact that you simply expect more from a BMW or is it just a crapppy torqueless engine?

1 Series are also hideously fugly. The so-called design reminds me of a roller skate.

BMW 116i

Slower than a mk4 Vauxhall Astra 1.4

Consumes the same amount of unleaded as an E90 M3

Well it has significantly under 100bhp/tonne, which is on a par with my girlfriend's 1.2 fiat Punto.

I had a friend who had one of these to do an airport run (company pool car) - he did circa 1 lepton with it and the mpg was shockingly poor - don't know the exact figure! hehe

Still, at least it's a good-looking car. If you're Stevie Wonder.

i just love the drivers (i say drivers because surely no one bought one with their own money?!, they must all be company cars....) anyway, they are almost always mid to late twenty year olds on the first step of the corporate ladder wearing their new Next suit who know feel sufficiently self righteous and important enough to spend their entire motorway journey in the middle lane, sit an inch from my bumper when i dare overtake another car and have some sort of immunity from all road laws, using mobiles etc.

arses the lot of em...

10secs to 60 isnt THAT slow, most cars with that sort of time still feel quite nippy. 122bhp out of the 1.6 4-pot isnt bad either, quite lively and more than the pre-facelift model. Saying that though small cars do seem to have got slower over time as they have put on weight. I remember about a decade ago even your basic Fiesta/Polo would manage the 0-60 sprint in 12secs but these days there all much longer than that.

I really dont know. I used to have a 1.6 Focus, it was far more responsive, much nippier.

Granted, my other 2 are circa 200bhp but this thing is horrendous. I cant even describe it tbh.

Its a strange feeling having your foot to the boards from the lights and theres standard diesel rep cars alongside you - occupant yawning and scratching his head at the same time as having a conversation with his wife and pulling away normally.

Maybe not on whatever planet you're from, but for the rest of us, it is.
