I'd love an escort but I fear the pices are only ever going to go up now and they're already fetching silly money frown

My first introduction to RWD wasn't so glorious. At 17 having been driving a mini since I passed my test, I needed to borrow my Grandad's Volvo V90 because the mini was doing what Minis do and breaking down. 3 weeks into my volvo adventure; came off a round about exit and started on with throttle a bit too eagerly and very quickly found myself at 90 degrees to the road. Tried to correct and just swung the other way and was greeted by a lamp post traveling very quickly towards the passenger window resulting in one very broken Volvo and one very scared 17 year old.

Driving an MGB GT now and enjoying the joys of rwd in a slightly more controlled manner. Long Live RWD

When he says "very broken" .... he means it!

And from the inside ... no wonder he was scared!!

His grandad wasn't overly pleased either!

PS ... I'm his Dad!

Love to read these stories, im 21 and i own a mk2 escort. its a harrier replica, unfortunatly uprating as i go along has seen me hit a wall...new set of cibies was needed there. I was fortunate enough to buy one, at the wrong time it seems as i payed top price for it and a few month after they started dropping in price! Currently having a 2.3 duratec built for it as the crossflow in it just hasnt enough power for me now, although it must be one of the fastest crossflows ever, with its cosworth pistons and big crank!it did rather put my mates type r to shame! Long live RWD!

What age did you get that at? Sounds a nice fun car - when I was 18, I had a Mk2 RS. Is the insurance pretty bad on it compared to modern fwd stuff?

I cut my teeth on a Mark One Escort, 1968 model, very early model, my father was a always a Ford fan and had just changed from a Ford Consul Cortina which he bought new in 1962 also early days of the Cortina. The Escort was an 1100, 2 door model, Spruce Green in colour with Black Vinyl seats, Radio was not even standard. I fitted an 8 track stereo player, plenty of sound. In 1971 he changed for a new Mark One, Metalic paint Tawny they called the colour. Veneer dash with a bit of padding, still only rubber mats and no radio. I travelled all over Ireland in it, great craic. Those were the days.

We owned a Mk1 for a few years only getting rid when baby no 1 came along.

what did I like, as a biker and someone who enjoys driving i liked teh fact I could go and have fun in a perfectly balanced, nimble, reliable, comfortable RWD car. through teh twisties it was quick but not so quick you couldn;t ring its neck. It gave me teh simple joy of enjoying teh drive no matter where I went in it.

Yet SWMBO who is non PH simply loved the looks, feel, speed and knowing no matter what it would start and get her where she wanted to go.

So two different types of driver but the one little thing fitted us both.

I'm in teh middle of some car/bike churn at the minute but once I've cleared out the stable I shall be looking for a toy again and an MX5 will be on the 'potential' list without a doubt.

I learnt to drive in an Escort Mk 1 and hated it with a passion. The Cortina Mk II I had was pretty lame as well. My first car was an Austin A40 - now that really was an under-rated car that repeatedly trounced my friend's Anglia 105E. I can't say i was ever a fan of the 60's and 70's Fords bar maybe the RS2000 Mk II and Cortina Mk III - there were always better cars out there.

However, I doubt anyone wouldn't consider their first car as some minor classic because we all bond with our first cars and treat them like gold.

This was NEARLY my first car. TWICE.
First deal fell through as the seller was a t**d, the second one was an 1100 with a pool ball for a gearknob, being sold by one of my mates at sixth form. He managed to crash it before I could buy it. B****r!

So, I ended up buying a Morris Marina.. I don't recommend it. And that's before it gets hit by a piano.
