Great idea, by your reckoning if you had the cash you would buy your 18 yr old kid a handgun if you lived in the US - why not?

Why wait for him to reach 18, you can get a rifle at 16.

I got my Clio when I was 19, had only been driving for just over a year. Fair enough it's not a 430 BHP car but I could still do some serious damage if I was a c0ck while driving. I can now get my hands on my Mother's 3.2 sport Merc. Im still yet to meet a tree, and Im pretty sure I'll not due to my driving and also my maturity. However, never say never I suppose.

Anyone got a link to the 18 year old with M5 thread then? Maybe that will answer the "why not" questions....

Didn't read like that to me.......

Why on earth would any sensible level thinking parent give a high performance car access (let alone purchase) to a new driver

To my viewpoint it's just wasting the previous 17 years and 9 months effort it took to get the child to an age where he could drive

It's pretty common in the US of A for children to get performance cars, although I am basing my opinion upon programmes on MTV and others I still reckon he deserves as much as anyone else but may lack the experience to handle it.

Just because it's common doesn't mean it's still not a daft thing to do biggrin

You do realize MTV only targets the really rich and not all of America?

No, he doesn't have the experience on the road.

But tbh, we all know nothing, for all we know he could have been driving around on private land for years now and might be able to handle such car.

Who knows.

Thing is if you get an M3 given at 17 what is it teaching you about life? (not that it will be an issue within a week of driving it of course) I got loaned £200 to buy my first car and have worked bloody hard to get the cars I've had.

Maybe a lot of this is wealthy parents trying to make up for big absences in the kids lives ie when they were working 70 hour weeks to get the money together. Theres probably a brilliant Chinese proverb for this somewhere lol

I'm very jealous.

I'm sure he'll be fine if he's sensible with it. My first car was relatively quick (albeit not camparable to an M3) and everyone thought I was going to crash it and I heard a lot of negative comments to that tune.

But I was sensible. I learnt how to drive properly, and I was fine. Set me up well for when I upgraded to the S3, which I did at 18.

As long as he's careful and appreciates that a 400+bhp V8 sports saloon WILL kill you if you're overzealous with the pedal on the right, he'll be just fine.
