"The rev counter nestles in the upper quadrant of its range, harmlessly headbutting red paint with ever sturdy shove of my shoe upon the business pedal. Occasionally it slinks away from its new friends at the top end of the register, momentarily recoiling on the cue of another upshift then all at once making a lunge for the line as brake meets toe and the throttle again feels heel, another downchange timed to perfection and slotted home like a searingly hot scalpel slung into a butter factory."

Fantastic article and a stonking motor!

I remember our old neighbour in Camberley had a 250 GTO, it came out on weekends, engine on, stereo on and then the cleaning process commenced circa lunch time. Quick trip around the roundabout and back in the garage by 6pm haha.

I would like to know if the PH writers actually 'floor' these cars knowing how valuable and precious they are to somebody?

Lots of talk about both turbo's spooling up and the nose pushing forward then the back stepping out - that would put me in a coma if I was the owner! You can certainly see from the condition that it's had bucket loads spent on the upkeep.

I was in Lambo Wycombe once where I met a guy from Monaco, who had his car in there. We were standing around chatting about it when one of the mechanics accidently reversed a murci into it....fortunately the damage wasnt too bad, but the sound was horrid and the guys face went completely white.

This was over 18 years ago before the Japanese guy paid $9m for one and then sold it a year later for $2m though, still a nice car. I was around 10 at the time and used to play around on my friend (his sons) kart's and mountain bikes, can't believe the stuff we used to wheel past the Ferrari. I can't imagine what would have happened if I scratched one!

Along with the Ferrari 206SP (a racer) the most beautiful, and the RIGHT size. I really think that modern Ferrari are way too wide to really enjoy driving. It should about the whole experience. Those huge tyres and wheels destroy the elegance and balance or the design. A Ferrari is now little more than an ego on wheels.

Remember when I was in my late teens and early 20's used to spend Sunday afternoon supercar "spotting", used to go to such garages as Modena Ferrari in east Horsley, Bramley in... well Bramley in Surrey where I saw my 1st convertible Daytona, (my personal favourite Ferrari), and had ticked most of the boxes in terms of supercars such porsche 959 etc, but had never seen a 288gto in the flesh, happened to mention this to one of the sales guys, who asked us to follow him, and took us out the back, he opened a garage door, and inside was a pile of twisted red metal, he informed me that it belonged to a banker (they were overpaid even back then!) who had within a day of buying it, wrapped it around a tree... "that pile of metal" informed the sales man, is worth a cool hundred grand!

Thats when supercars were worth a lot money!

I used to work in air freight at Heathrow airport and cleared that car through customs when it came back from Japan.. cannot remember what the shipping invoice valued it at, but I do remember thinking that the guy had lost a bloody fortune!

Only surpassed by the Miura.
Is it only me who thinks the Miura was pretty minging and totally over talked by todays press?
no, but you can count you're buddies on one hand here I reckon...
personally I'd put the 288 over the Muira..
Another one here. Never been a Miura fan.

I chased one of these up the Col du Turini in the summer. He set off about 2 minutes before me, when i got to the top the car was parked but the driver was nowhere to be seen, but the car was pinging and banging as it cooled down. He must have just switched it off, no cooling down of the turbos! He must have been absolutely ragging it, i hit 90mph a few times, but the GT0 is WIDE! The Col du Turini, is not.... The bumper was covered in stonechips and a little scrape, nice to see that GTO was enjoyed and not just stuck in a collection somewhere. i think they are currently valued more than an F40 aren't they??

It's been debated on here before but I think that the 288 GTO and the F40 were the last of the really good looking Ferraris.
Definatly. I own both ( models ).
forget the modern stuff .. these are iconic.

fast rewind to my bedroom xx years ago, with a silver 959 and white Countach... I wanted to want the 959....but couldn't with this on the same poster...
Was there any young lad who loved cars that didn't have that poster???

I was torn between 959 and 288, but now, more mature (I think) the 288 gets it every time!

Almost certainly one of the most stunning cars ever built, along with the Daytona and Boxer. Proper ferraris', not like those awful things they turn out these days, apart from the 599 GTB.
