There is no way in a million years I would pay £45k for a 'small' Audi, however special and quick its trying to be, and especially if its detuned the way Caymans were when they hit the market so not to step on other cars in its range, you'd be a fool at the moment. Everytime I'd see a new one I would be shaking my head thinking "the saleman seriously saw you coming", Audi's are so overpriced, and are only a decent proposition when second hand (I am still thinking of a nice S4 soon).

You have to seriously look into second hand options in the current climate, and when/if it hits the market (next couple of years?), the second hand market is still the better option and best value for the ph driving experience for any budget. I suppose someone has to buy brand new otherwise we wouldn't have their bargains a few years later, but its them who are throwing away over £20k depeciation in a year or so, and they probably feel that having a warranty is a big saving in the long run, its not, buying second-hand does that.

I opened my eyes when I worked for a major fleet company for years and I will never buy brand new again compared to the second hand savings of the same model, having seen the running costs and more importantly huge depeciation on all types of cars, compared to common warranty claims and average savings, its a no brainer unless your buying some sort of exotica. Now start saving for a second hand RS3 in five years time.

Audi are on a resurgence at the moment sales and image wise and good on them.

I just can't help thinking that underneath all that glitz and fetish-like styling, they are mostly an ordinary product. Bit like an i-pod really. IMHO

R8 and RS4 aside smile
Yeah in my opinion I think BMW are a bit too common these days I think audi seems a bit more special.

Not saying that BMW's arent nice cars at all but its nice to have something a bit different.
Aye, gone are the days when the defacto company car was a Ford Cortina / Granada (or Jag) for the boss on the drives of Great Britain. BMW 3 Series = the modern equivalent to Cortina and whether we like it or not I think that is the way Audi will be heading based on their success - but at least there's a bit more variety in the market these days Avant/Saloon/Coupe smile A4/A5

30yr old, no kids, lives in town so parking is tight, no need for large boot space and wants a bit of fun has a company car budget of 35-40k for his next car from the list (so no sports cars, remember) - 135i, 335i, 530i, warm A4, mid range A6. Well knock off the larger ones straight away - no need for the space and the parking will be a pain. So the choice is really between the *35i's and the RS3.

RS3 will have a nicer interior and be a bit more practical when it comes to taking the mountain bike out or decides to get a dog, and lets be honest, it'll tonk either of the bm's pace wise.

I don't think it's that daft a proposition. I wouldn't buy one with my own money - and if I'm honest, I wouldn't get one as a company car, but I can see why someone would. RS editions aren't designed to sell by the thousand so what does it matter that it will have limited appeal?

It'll be a Subaru Impreza for people who moan about scratchy plastics, even BMW haven't filled that niche.

It's increasingly common on here, regrettably.

Oh, and as for the "you can get a used xxx for that" brigade, as I've pointed out before:

1) You can apply the same logic to this car. A used RS3 will be a good purchase in 12-36 months.
2) Someone has to buy the cars new or eventually there will be no used cars left, rendering (1) above impossible.

I want one!!

Until some smart a$$ with an s3 pulls up next to you at the lights and blows you into the weeds with his remap and a few other bits stuck on for good measure. The point being he only paid 20k all in and you just paid double that!! But no doubt people will buy one, which im glad as im sure it will be a good car... then i can pick up a nice secondhand one in a couple of years time.

I dont want one now!

this works both ways though you would (will) be able to do similar mods to the RS3 and still blow him into the weeds!

Does this thing come as an estate?

If so Im thinking £35k for 340BHP estate of a decent size not stupid massive size (Mercs and RS4/RS6 size), well built, good looking, good interior...surely this is an RS2 for the times?

But then your warranty is void. Which kind on puts you back to the point where you could buy a slightly used something better.

It's a great concept, but as said an eye watering price.

Personally I'd find it hard to look past other mint used RS models at half the cost. Good luck to those who will take the plunge though. You'd better enjoy it as the depreciation will be immense. Don't forget, if you like fast VW's, you can get the 550bhp GT's for £10k less than a properly specc'd RS3 now!

Yes, I'd struggle to get past a second hand black RS4 Avant with the badges taken off...

They are down to around £30k now... Mmmmmmmm

Yeah because as usual you've driven one and had a back to back test with the BMW haven't you...

Have you?

rolleyes

Have you read the reviews of the current S3 and how quick cross country it is? Audi seem to be doing a little better of late making good drivers cars, what makes you think a tweaked S3 with more power is going to be slower given than the BMW when the standard S3 is almost as quick in a straight line?

yes its getting rediculous,

people will only be happy when a car is built that is 4wd, feather lightweight, minimum of 300bhp, rolls royce interior, 5, 6 or 8 cylinders, does 50mpg , 5 seats and a boot but in some kind of coupe bodystyle, and costs around £15k, with servicing of £100 a time and a bmw or audi badge on the front.

and then someone will come and say well you can get something better second hand.

but new cars are new and 2nd hand cars are used.
