HAB am I ight thinking that 1350 is without options- my owners manual mentions 1399 all in. confused
1350 is a a rounded figure for the updated cars with the more modern dash. The Turbo and 968 are the heaviest of the lot. 1399 sounds about right for a fully loaded Turbo S.

Top one. Solid, well made and reliable. With some tlc that one could go and go and go.

Seem to remember the early 924 rather unkindly being referred to as an 'Audi Coupe'. Amazing how much more benignly everyone welcomed the 944.

Were the bodies on these cars galvanised?

The lower part of the shell was from the start till 1979, from then on the whole body was galvanised IIRC.

Nice to see this model get some recognition. Have owned ours since it was 6 months old. ('86 E). I remember many a day being squashed in the back seats with my bro being hurtled to school by dad in the mornings. It never missed a beat, and when company cars came this way it was sat up for 3 years. Rolled it out 3 years later, and started second time of asking, and happily idled to it's hearts content. Car has done over 120K now and is used again everyday, (dad's fav car) up until it succumbed to a Pajero on icecry Should be finished soon and back to it's former glory.

If that S has only done under 70K then it is a real bargin. The colour is not the most desireable, but it does suit it more than others. Bumper would be an easy fix also.

"One of my schoolmates had a fine looking mother, and crikey, did she look glamorous behind the wheel of her 924 S coupe.

So I offer you this week’s SOTW as a kind of sleazy tribute to sordid teenage memories. It’s the wrong colour perhaps, because in a perfect world it would be metallic blue. But in a perfect world it would be 1986 again, and my mate’s mum would be giving me a lift home from school…"

I've always been a fan of the 924 (the poor relation thing appeals to me) and this is a great SOTW. Will get one one day. Nearly bought a black Le Mans version once, very nice but had to spend the cash else where frown

Wasnt't the engine block originally of Audi origin?
Yes, and it uses lots of VW parts, the 924 was going to be the replacement for the Karman Ghia and VW commissioned Porsche to design it for them, but then decided they didn't want it. So Porsche bought the IPR for a knockdown price and made it themselves.
More accurately it was a DKW engine (OHV originally), designed when DKW was owned by Mercedes. Auto Union aquired the engine when it bought DKW and Volkswagon aquired it when the bought Auto Union / AUDI. AUDI later upgraded the engine to an OHC design which they used in the AUDI 100 saloon. Porsche took this AUDI engine and redesgined the cylinder head and added a forged steel cranshaft and fuel injection. Some time later VW used a low compression version of the OHC AUDI engine in a T2. This base engine design is still used by VAG and if you look at the current 1.8 litre 20v turbo engines, you can still see the blanked off camshaft hole in the block (not seen myself, but Im told by a highly respected Porsche engine builder): but know-it-alls dont seem as keen to refer to this engine as a 'VW van engine'.....
Good grief you lot; the 924S has a 2.5 litre Porsche designed and built 4 cylinder engine that is in effect 1/2 of the 928's V8. It uses balancer shafts and was finally developed into the 240bhp 16v 3litre 968 engine and the 250bhp 2.5l 944turbo motor. A turbo protoype 944 even ran at Le Mans in the early 80's.

It has nothing in common with the earlier 2l engine of Audi origin.

I realise that: I was ranting about the nonsense written in the original article about it having a 'VW van engine'...biggrin It never fails to get my goat.
........and thats why i read "comments".
Amongst the tedious whining about the shape of indicators etc there is some genuinely interesting info and proper knowledge with the occasional worthy gag.
Ta!
Its nice to receive something other than the usual "f*ck off troll!" biggrin

What massive repair bills?
When my 944 was my daily driver it did 38K in 18 months with servicing, tyres & a clutch slave cylinder!

Great SOTW!!!

Fantastic cars. Ours (well, my better half's) has covered nearly 50K in 5 years of ownership and for nearly a year it was our only car. We've had a couple of cringe-worthy bills but (touch wood-look desk) it's been incredibly reliable and an absolute hoot to drive.

A possible job relocation means we may have to press it into service for a 40 mile round trip commute across some great Sussex B roads. With 140k now showing on the clock, we won't give it a second thought. Nicely run in and well up for it biggrin

Getting a throttle response cam and changing to the Dansk SS exhaust really changes the character and makes a great, underrated car even better.

For what they're worth at the mo', selling is pointless - enjoying it is a much better option!

Always remember the only biggish job I did in my brief stint of 924S ownership. It was a 4-wheel damper change and one of my colleagues was doing the same job on a very ordinary Toyota Avensis. It cost him significantly more on his Japanese repmobile.
