Wasnt't the engine block originally of Audi origin?
Yes, and it uses lots of VW parts, the 924 was going to be the replacement for the Karman Ghia and VW commissioned Porsche to design it for them, but then decided they didn't want it. So Porsche bought the IPR for a knockdown price and made it themselves. Neomagic said:
Great cars, still very underpowered though.
You can always put a Chevy V8 in it. http://www.renegadehybrids.com/

In my experience the only people who waffle about the 924 being underpowered, or van engines, are those who know nothing about it, and certainly haven't driven it. Clearly the shed in question has the 2.5 Porsche engine anyway.
Most cars of this vintage appear to have low power if you are just looking at bhp, modern engines tend to extract many more horses from the same cc. This certainly doesn't mean that classic cars are 'underpowered' or 'hairdressers cars' whatever that may mean. Any petrol head worth his salt will rate the Golf GTI mark one for example, high bhp? I don't think so.
Cars like the 924S have light weight in their favour, but where it really scores is in perfect weight distribution, leading to fantastic handling, and great aerodynamics. The 924S scores over the 944 in this respect. When first released the 924 was groundbreaking in it's extremely low drag coefficient (don't know if the terminology is correct). In fact in the 924S I think they kept the engine slightly de-tuned compared to the 944 to prevent it from being faster than big brother!
I have had a couple of 924's, and a couple of 924S's, and all I can say is, God bless the ignorant, they keep the price of these fantastic cars low for those smart enough to enjoy at a bargain price! As for servicing costs, apart from a couple of fiddly jobs already highlighted, find a good specialist, and it'll be one of the cheapest and most reliable cars to keep on the road!
Now where did I put my scissors!!!
