My first weekend with my MX5
Discussion
Absolute bliss.
Before I bought my MX5, I didn't quite believe the hype surrounding it, I struggled slightly to get round "that" image it has but persisted when people raved about it being such a drivers car.
I drove it & was immediately impressed with how brilliant it felt to drive, granted mine has a combination of Bilsteins & a great set of Toyo's, it still felt like a little go-kart you can chuck around.
We did have a slight problem with some gears not engaging but my mechanic put that down to it not being properly screwed back together by the last owner, so that was resolved & ended up with me heading for home via the country lanes @ 11:30 Friday nights with the top down.
Cue the weekend, my first chance to drive the car in the daytime, & despite living in a lovely sunny seaside town, no-one else had the top down . Regardless, the humble MX5 still turned heads & had kids exclaiming about it being such a cool car. It's no ferrari but the fact it can still attract such a positive reaction is a real testament to the designers, even though the MX5 is nearly 20yrs old!!
The '5 then earnt it's bread & butter in my delivery job over the weekend where even customers were slightly bemused with me turning up with there food with the roof down, but again, positive reactions.
Sunday, I was visiting a "friend" of the female variety yesterday & ended up doing the route from Worthing/Slough/Windsor/Reading/Brighton/Slough/Worthing...Racked up alot of miles that day & blasting back to Brighton when the sun was setting, going along at 0.9 leptons with the roof down & the most perfect music with a gorgeous girl in the passenger seat was total bliss...She knew it too & we both agreed that those few minutes of musical ecstasy twinned with where we were, what we were doing & that sunset made it absolute perfection.
When we got to Brighton, this was our reward.
It just couldn't get any better...But it did, heading back home after a long day tootling along the A27 back home with the temperature in minus figures, scarf, gloves, the works! Still with a huge grin on my face because not only did I have a clear starry sky above me, I had Percy Sledge come on the radio to accompany me home.
This morning, a bit of frost, people still wrapped up warm but the sun was shining like it was summer. Roof down again...Why not!? I felt like the only guy with a smile driving all 35 miles to work. I arrived with my hair looking like something Don King would be proud of, but I didn't care, it was an awesome drive.
To top it off, my work colleagues & the MD ALL complimented the car...No-one has yet to say a bad word about it. I've had lectures from everyone all week on what to get, to get something "Reliable" & "Sensible" but my mid 60's female boss loves it, the 26yr old attractive lass adores it. The managing director fancies it, & our warehouse guy from Gaza approves to.
What is with this car? No-one dislikes it? Everyone adores it in some shape or form & it really does do no wrong.
What a car...In just 1 weekend it's given me & a gorgeous girl some incredible memories & now I just KNOW this summer will be incredible.
Forget the stereotypes & the stigma, if you love driving but you don't have thousands & thousands to spend & want budget fun at it's very best...This is THE car.
I'm converted.

I hope you've got business use on your insurance for doing that. ETA: I wouldn't recommend parking under trees with the roof down too often either.

They are awesome cars. I had a mk2.5 Euphonic for the weekend just gone and had a great time hurtling around Cheshire. Also had a mk1 and mk2 but I must admit I need more power these days. I prefer having that extra oomph for the country lane overtakes.
Fantastic round the bends, just enough power and cheap as chips. Great little things.

No birds around on these trees but you're right, I'm tempting fate

My gf's planning on buying her first car.
I'm sponsoring, but only if she goes MX5
I'm in a similar position, but mine's scared of driving anything 'sporty', so we're stuck with the Focus.I'm sponsoring, but only if she goes MX5
She just needs some convincing I think (as in sponsoring )

I'm tempted by one, but is there enough headroom if you are 6ft 1? I've only driven one with the top down.
I should think so, my friend has one, and he's very tall. A fair bit taller than me and I'm not far off 6ft. I must admit I'm tempted too now! We were in mid Wales, not exactly thrashing around, but I could see it could be a good cheap fun weekend car.

I am 6' and have no probs. You could always get one that had been modified with a motorsport seat if headroom were an issue (probably not great as a daily driver mind you) or buy an aftermarket one and fit it yourself, also saves a bit of weight Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
