Yerp.

That is v. cool. E28 is a level I'd be willing to climb in at, as a modern BMW avoider.

I remember my dad had one of these - it used to try and kill him every now and then. Eventually the engineer traced it to a broken collar on either a prop shaft or the LSD (can't remember which). Because of this the car would sometimes only power one wheel, which would create some interesting moments.

No messing around with £999 price tags here - he wants £987 for his motor.
Out of the entire article that was the bit that got me most. I mean, where on earth did that obscure figure come from?
Well I guess he considered £987.654321 But decided to round it down rather than up saving the purchaser 66p.
Putting £987 on an advert is actually an old sales trick. It sounds more considered than £999. It is supposed to make people think that you have thought about it alot. He may actually want to hold out for £950 rather than taking £900 for instance.

Nice shed!

I've got a 1985 Diamond Schwarz M535i with a manual gearbox, I bought it two years ago and love it to bits. Due to work, it's currently sat in the garage with no MOT but the old girl will be back on the road again soon. I am intending to lightly restore it and get her looking all shiny and new again.

They are a wonderful car, 218bhp, make a lovely howl when pressed on and even twenty five years after first going on sale, they can shame a few more modern machines. I am biased mind, I won't ever sell the beasty!

I see you actually put your money, were your mouth is and put a deposit down on a Pink Micra Cab and a pig ugly X6, well done you! What did your shrink make of your shrewd purchases?!

Back on topic, I didn't quite manage to stretch the budget to an M535I so I bought a 528I instead, any way good excuse as any to stick up another E28 picture.

I haven't been in an E28 for over 20 years. How do they shape up as a driving experience compared to, say, a boggo modern family hatch? Can they hold their own to some degree or are they totally archaic now?

Being in the trade I've flitted between modern cars (Saab, Alfa, Skoda and most current rep mobiles and small hatches)and my E28 on a regular basis.

Mine as I stated above is "only" the 528I manual so that's about 170-180bhp and about 1400kg of car to haul about, so its sprightly, rather than quick but easily fast enough to keep up with traffic and embarrass the unwary.

Handling could be better but I think mine is in need of a spruce up, for example I have no idea when the dampers were last replaced. Just because they are good enough to get through an MOT doesn't mean they aren't well past their use by date!

Brakes aren't too hot, it does have ABS but the front disks are tiny.

The interiors are rather up right but nicely made and rarely rattle or squeak. Options like air con are rare but being an eighties car sunroofs are common place!

After a day were I would put a hundred or so miles on a well appointed modern car, it would often be a relief to climb back into the E28 and head home!

That's a bit harsh, mate??

Atleast these cars won't depreciate much, and, if anything, will appreciate in value.

Whereas your X6 probably loses more than £1k every month....

You should think before putting up dumb comments like this - it is SOTW after all, where cars get bought for a £k budget - not £50k.

Also, for someone that has a Micra, and prob wasted several grand on one, maybe you would have been better off spending a grand or so and picking up a proper motor.

'nuff said.

No mate, these cars definitely do hold their own and will shame many modern motors.

My old E34 535i Sport used to embarras many cars, and I know that these are quicker machines, as they are lighter....

I'm afraid you're wrong...I have a huge stack of unrefurbished TRX wheels that I would give away...agreed worthless as they stand. The tyres are crap especially in the wet etc etc....We all know that.

Unfortunately however, for concours restorations and originality perfect ones and full tread Michelin TRX tyres come at a huge premium now. Unfortunately, the days of giving those away have long, long since gone my friend!

Look here.......I wouldn't call £273/tyre exactly "giving them away"...would you?:

http://www.vintagetyres.com/display.asp?K=20090403...

And in fact I have personally sold them to buyers even to a classic car restorer in Paris for good money!
