I too had E28 528i's...they are 'old' cars now and car technology has moved on leaps and bounds...indeed at one point I had 3 generations of 5-Series simultaneously and so could compare them back to back. Each successive generation was a huge leap forward dynamically and a better daily car...but the older cars still were enjoyable as a driving experience in their own right.
AND as Interloper said...just because they have an MOT to be fooled and think you couldn't end up with major problems ahead. Here are a few of the "Before" and "During" shots of the Diamond Black one on my website:

Thanks for the insights interloper and Derin. All noted for when I start shopping later this year, unfortunately with only around £3-4K to play with. I think an E39 will be the sensible choice as I'll need a daily driver, but I've always loved the sharknose look and covet something like that red M535i.

Also, for someone that has a Micra, and prob wasted several grand on one, maybe you would have been better off spending a grand or so and picking up a proper motor.

I had a silver 1983 e28 528i then i had a dark blue 1987 m535i with colour coded bbs alloys, dog leg gear box,
black leather recaro interior,glass electric sunroof and air con, also had a stainless steel full exhaust built with a dtm tail pipes which sounded amazing.
I used to like to give it a blast at rwyb events it could do low 16secs and take it to classic car shows where it always turned heads.
It was unfortunatly written off by some dim witted house wife going into the back of me at temporary traffic lights on the A429. I could actualy see her chatting to her mates before she ploughed into me in her old mans granada.
Still annoyed adout it now 10 years later.
I still drive an old bmw a 1988 e30 325i for every day use and a 1994 supercharged black Trans Am for high days and holidays.

Maybe I'm being overly pedantic, but why do people refer to LSDs as 'slippy' diffs? Surely a normal open diff is the slippiest kind of diff, and an LSD is by definition a 'not so slippy diff'...
LSD stands for limited slip differential. As the name implies--and you stated--it provides more traction than an open differential. By abbreviating it thus, the word limited is omitted, which makes it sound like the opposite of what it is. "Slippy diff" is another one of those bizarre-sounding (to me) British abbreviations, such as Teggy for Honda Integra, leccy windows for electric windows, etc. that sound like a five year old talking. Maybe I'm being overly pedantic, but why do people refer to LSDs as 'slippy' diffs? Surely a normal open diff is the slippiest kind of diff, and an LSD is by definition a 'not so slippy diff'...

I've watched this advert since it was posted and was going to buy it myself. Only problem is I don't have the room as I currently own 3 cars which includes the Monza GSE which was SOTW last year. Something has to go 
I just rang around for insurance, and everyone is insisting on a CAT1 alarm immobiliser or tracker as these are apparently a joy riders dream. Also as it's a group 18 car, the best quote was with FJ again - last week they were crap now they are good - comes in at £425 fully comp, but I am 43 so that's more than my other cars alltogether, Why do the quotes vary so much?

I had a E28 528i which I took in part exchange, it had sloppy old suspension and quite worn metrics on it. An absolute hoot to drive, if it was even slightly damp of a morning it was akin to driving on an ice rink. The look on other commuters faces as you slid past on lock at about 20mph as they waited to enter a roundabout was a picture. I have never in my life driven anything where you spent so much time looking out of the side windows as that thing, I'd have one like a shot, just with some decent rubber on it.
Oops, looks like Im a bit late on this thread.. Between 4-5 years ago I had an 87 535i SE with 5 speed manual and MTEC TRX alloys with dreadful Avon Turbospeed tyres - I could not give them away - I nearly cried when I took them to the local tip with at least 4mm tread on them! I fitted E34 alloys, lowered it approx 30mm and Northampton Motorsport fitted a cold air feed, pipercross cone filter, adjustable fuel pressure valve and rolling roaded it showing 225bhp, not bad for a 185,000 miler. I had a couple of great summers at Santa Pod running consistent low 15's with total reliability, with donuts in the field afterwards until being thrown out, Ahh what fun.
