Have you thought about getting it wrapped, it's much cheaper but doesnt last as long.

Put it this way Thom. Most normal people, me included, would struggle to justify a half decent full respray on a car worth £5k. Trying to justify the sort of expenditure you are talking about even just for spraying the bonnet is basically financial hari kari. Either live with it as is, or get shot of it and get something betterdifferent.
yes

Flogging a dead one here, even if you had it done i wouldn't expect it to add much in the way of value. Maybe easier to sell, that's all though.
Thinking about it it may even make it harder to sell! Some may think it's hiding some damage etc...

Seriously, keep your money, add it to the value of the car when you sell it.. get something better(?).
The climb up the tree of 'car improvement' is slow... but worth it eventually.

Unfortunately for him, the OP seems intent on impeding his progress up this ladder by seeking out increasingly desperate ways to pour his hard earned down a volkswagen shaped drain.

now now, play nice.

i've taken everyones advice and am now looking for cheap thrills in the shape of a striaght 6 biggrin

BMW 320 seems the logical choice. some are available for under 1k and with my birthday in about a week the possibility of having some cash added to my car fund may be promising.

watch this space.

That would be a better bet.

Buy a nicer car that is perhaps in need of a little attention and then get a decent resprey on that if you must. It would break my heart spending all that cash on a car that was nothing special. Mk1 golf GTi or corrado VR6 if you were keeping it then maybe but not yours.

If you want the car to be imactulate then that is the way to go. Just remeber that all these costs are never recouped.

I learned that lesson the hard way with mountain biking.

I spend roughtly 2.5k upgrading my orange patriot and was only able to sell it for 600 2 years later.

That hurt. Alot

as others are saying, when it comes to paint, you pays what you gets ... and a poor quality job just is not worth the effort!

save the pennies for the next car as your insurance premiums come down!

I got a quote for £800 for my old pug 306, from a very good bodyshop, i know many people who have had dints repaired from them.

I would say however, just save. save. save! and get your Golf 12 months MOT, and surely you can get some decent money from her!

I totally agree with Ollie.

Anything you spend on this car is lost money. You won't get it back and what's worse is that you won't see any significant improvement.

You would be much, much, much better putting the money into something else.

Thom, you may want to reconsider using that phrase.

I haven't read page 2 of this thread.. But I agree fully with Ollie.

Thom i'm the same age as you, I could never ever justify spending any amount on a re-spray as my first car. Your probably attatched to it, as it is your first car.. As I am mine, I didn't like it at first, but I like it now.. Changing it for the highest spec when it comes to 1 year NCB in 4 months, I like it that much.

But really don't waste your money doing this.. Think, that £2k you'd spend on getting a respray on a MK3 golf.. Surely, you'd sell it, save a little extra too, and get a MK4 or the like. Their very nice cars, and you could easily keep it until your 21+ when you can look at getting a faster/more expensive car.

I'm doing it with the C2, i've got a VTR now.. 4 months i'll have a VTS and i'll be happy with that for the next 2/3 years until i've saved up/insurance has gone down and i'll get a better car then.

Please don't waste the money!

Would thrown under a truck be better?

Bear in mind you will only get about 2p trade in value for your golf against something sub £1500 at a dealer.

The only real way to get anything like decent money for it will be by selling privately.

ETA

If you can sell it!!

Yeah, 'cos he wanted about five times what it was worth.

i got a qoute from my local bodyshop for a bear shell respray everything done and all the underside stonechiped etc for £3500 for my mini, a local man who sprays cars in his shed even qouted £1500 so i was skint and thought stuff it and spent £100 on paint and £50 on a air feed mask and set of and did it myself, i must say it is not perfect but better that what the local in the shed does (freind had a car done and the qaulity is rather poor) and at a 10th of the cost.

you pay for what you get is what i say, once i get money and a full time job it will be going to the local pro for a dusting

Thom its a painful experience watching you gain your experience. Olly speaks a lot of sense, can understand you wanting the car to look as good as possible but when you post threads like this and the self tapping screws for a strut brace its hard to tell if you are serious or utterly clueless.
Ok, allow me to clear my name a bit.

Self tappers for the strut brace was an honest question. It was asked as that was what came with the brace to fit it, it didnt seem right, so i asked.

This is also genuine, the car looks horrid with the current paint imperfections so if i could get them sorted it would be great. im not going to spend silly money but i am taking onboard the advice, hence me trying to find other alternatives. At the end of the day i want my car to loog good. not 'stick on tat' good, but just tidy. currently the paints the only thing letting it down.

I'll get some quotes to see what the cost of getting the major imperfections solved is but i wont hold my breath.
this is going back quite some time but in 95 I had a full respray done to my Capri. Cost was 700 quid and within weeks it had orange peel.
