Sorry, but how many people genuinly want to drive around in some old Golf or Puegeot? seriously?

They have no class or style and are completely outdated, I for one wouldnt even take my family in one, not only because id be too embarrised, but because if you had an accident it'd be game over.

I dont undertsnad that, I like having a modern, comfortable car, but then I suppose it takes all sorts, and different budgets mean different allownaces for a car, but to deliberately want an old car like that is beyond me.

Im sure the sales of this new GTi will be superb, looks like an excellent car and competes comfortably with it's competition where it really counts these days.

A very feeble attempt at trolling and yet still I'm going to respond, but if you really don't understand why people would drive an old Golf or 205 GTi then you're on the wrong site mate. Try www.repmobile.com or www.i-just-want-a-stty-eurobox-to-lug-my-2-point...

If you're genuinely not trolling then I suggest you get that glass stomach wall installed so you can see where you're going.

I don't think pistonheads is the website for you having seen that sentiment expressed.

Surely a replacement to the R32? There has been a MK4 and 5! They can't go backwards? Although if they went back to the MK2, that wouldn't be a bad starting point. I think the MK4 R32 is my favourite Golf design. The Scirocco is a no brainer to buy in comparison with the new Golf at the moment.

Funny how building a car that is off the pace of the rest of the segment is suddenly a 'Niche' vehicle.

I suppose the American auto makers make many niche cars at that rate.

I don't see it as off the pace - the Golf GTi was never put head to head against the Escort Cossie, and 99.99% of the GTi's target market won't even be aware of the R26.R etc. The Focus RS and R26.R are the niche vehicles, the Golf GTi is the practical, sporty and refined 'small' hatch it's always been. The Mk2 (90 onwards) was available with air con for instance.

Edit; I'm kinda biased though..

I think it is a shame that the GTI is being compared directly with the Focus RS and the Renault R26.R. The GTI for VW at least since the MK4 has only been an intermediary trim level, with the R32 being the range-topping model like fords focus RS or renaults R26.R or Astras VXR's.

IMO the R20T will most likely be the successor to the R32. With the nature of increasingly environmentally conscious businesses, it kind of makes sense to continue to use homologations of either the 2.0TFSI or 2.0TSI since R32 power can be achieved with less cylinders, less emissions and less fuel consumption than previous years. Even saying that, a MK6 Golf R36 would be very tasty indeed and offer far more tunability, however highly unlikely unless you were to fork out about 15 large ones to a tuning company to do the conversion for you :P

This car is a complete rip off. If you start adding a few extras to these you're looking at 26k at least. I think it's possible to spend 32k with every conceivable option. I'm sure it's a decent drive but you can get better cars for quite a lot less these days. It also looks really boring to my eyes.
It's very expensive - the one I specced on the VW site came to £26k with the spec I'd want.

But if you look at what else £26k buys you brand new, it doesn't look too bad.

£26k only buys you a (very) low spec 320d for example...

I agree - it will do well because, like the Mk5, it is a sensible and classless hot hatch with reasonable running costs (economy and emissions) when compared to other 'rivals'.

Last I checked practicality wasn't at the top of the list for hot hatches, chuckability, speed, cost, and smile factor are what make up a great hot hatch. The original golf wasn't popular because it was highly refined or that practical, it was a hoot to drive.

Remember when you could get a 200hp Honda Type-R for 16k, and now here we are with a 200hp VW for 24k, high price for refinement there.

I dont think you can compare this to an RS or R26R - totaly different cars.

The GTI has that classy, well made and fast appeal about it that a putrid green car or ones with plastic windows can only aspire to.

I mean i love the RS and admire the hardcore nature of the R26 but they are not similar vehilces, compare the fully kitted new Megane cup with this and an ST and that is a fair comparison - i would have the Golf every time - OR a BMW 130i smile

I have a MK5 GT diesel which has a Revo upgrade and test driven the 230hp GTI version. Both excellent cars. Believe it or not, my diesel has more grunt, but the GTI lower front end weight makes it a bit sharper turning in. I also had a brilliant Mk2 8v with a high lift cam conversion and Bilstien suspension before I took delivery of the MK5. Soon after, I had to go to Carlisle (6hrs + journey) and I was glad of the MK5, but for shorter journey`s the MK2 is far better, and why? Steering feel, all modern cars have indirect steering systems, which just do not give the same feedback, no matter how good,.... and weight/size. Think how big the current Golf is compared with the original.
Now, make a proper GTI new style Polo with proper steering, and you`ll have a cracker....oh, sounds rather a lot like the orignal Golf in spec?

I disagree, this site covers more new cars then it does old cars, so maybe you should go over to www.idriveanoldwreck.co.uk where you can discuss cars from 20 years ago.

People with their old bangers thinking they own some classic because there arent many on the roads, hmm, ever think that's because no one wants them anymmore?

Seriously, have you even read a copy of evo? Do you understand that this site is about exciting, fun cars? Have you ever driven a Golf GTi or a 205 GTi? Or is your appreciation of motoring limited to damped cupholders and soft-touch plastic?

I don't know what you drive but I can guarantee that no matter what it is I could run rings round you in my 1990 Golf (I am cheating on the power front though) and have a stload more fun that you in your "new car". Or are all these people driving 1973 911s and Lamborghini
Miuras also idiots who should chop them in for a Lacetti?

'Different strokes for different folks' aside, you've definitely got the wrong site mate.

Again, you're either trolling or genuinely haven't got a clue what you're talking about. New = good, old = bad, right? Nothing else even comes into the equation? Pistonheads is all about new cars?
