There was an article on here a week or 2 ago about a GTD. Its not really what most people were hoping for though, still using the 170 (albeit the common rail version) but thought they might of brought a twin turbo engine with 200+bhp. Also it didn't look all that nice to me.

We average 35mpg - yes we drive reasonably gently.

Was kept well serviced and looked after when I had it. I am probably exaggerating a little - perhaps 31-33mpg on a motorway. Still nothing like averaging 35!

My on-board computer of my 6MPS shows my average at never more than 21mpg....yet another reason why I wish I had kept the MkV GTi.

If you're in traffic, going with the flow then the FSi engine is very economical. If you're pelting down the outside lane or perfecting your line on a favourite back road then yes, it will do around 30mpg. I've had over 40mpg (40.9 at best I think) out of ours in several runs from cold - Wycombe to Cambridge, keeping around 70mph max, Llandudno to Whitby (on holiday, no rush, just cruised along with the flow due to traffic), and Wycombe to North London via M1 on a Sat AM.

I noticed this when I did a very sedate run to south Wales and back. Probably 65 mph a lot of the way on a (congested) M4. I didn't take a measurement, but the car seemed to use very little fuel. On other slightly faster motorway trips it has drunk like a fish. I think perhaps they are a bit Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to burning fuel.

Interestingly, can you say whether yours was the manual or DSG? I had the DSG and not only did it seem to use more fuel than my mate's manual, it seemed less 'frisky' as well - which was a shame. His manual seemed much more urgent and drivable. I never really got to grips with the DSG when pressing on. I used to get really narked on approaching a roundabout as well - see and gap and go for, and it was always in the wrong gear...which resulted in keeping the selector in manual mode and using the paddles, again probably pushing down the mpg.

I miss the car, tho. I really do.

I don't understand why people love it so much either. Auto or not there's no clutch and it changes gears itself (albeit quite rapidly).

I would choose works 140 gt manual over the dsg 170 every day of the week

Exactly my plan with the Mk V before too long. Might be tempted by a R26, but the good thing about the Golf is it is an easy one to slip past the wife- she just sees a nice big comfortable, sensible hatch with 5 doors. Bingo.

I think I like the mk5 Golf look better, but nothing wrong with this one, just has more of a chisled look to it.
As for the twin tailpipes, I think VW has the Focus ST in mind; I am sure they lost a lot of sales to the ST and probably other models.
As for interior, sorry "Vagabond" & "Pommygranite" but I find the interior looks a bit dull. Best thing is the tasty seats though. Not too sure about a GTI being cheaper to insure than an ST. Also "Vagabond" your perception of an accident is bull, do you think because these new cars are advertised with all these safety features you would not get killed or seriously injured in a modern car, dream on. It only is that there would be a less likelyhood. Nothing wrong in driving a mk2 GTI, I would drive one and not feel embaressed, as long as its in a good condition, cant see no wrong in it.
One thing, the GTI badge has always eclipsed the R32 badge. More people know of a Golf GTI than a Golf R32 and some would think the GTI is the flagship model, when the R32 is.

The mk6 Golf GTI gets a thumbs up from me, still a good car. Although I am going to be buying the RS. As said by many, the GTI and RS are not comparitive IMO.

Just specified one up one the VW UK configurator......(you still can't specify Xenons wtf is that about- supply chain issues!?).....but anyway fully specified it's about £31.5k.......FFS you can get a pre-reg brand new delivery mileage E90 M3 saloon nicely specified with EDC etc. for £40k.....

and which prospective Golf buyer will make that comparison for real? They may check the Audi A3, BMW 1/3 series and Volvo hatch thing pricing. Not a 20mpg M3 though - different game altogether.

Given a vRS weighed 1320kg new and a lot less when stripped out it didnt have anywhere near 480hp .
