I believe that charities fall into hire and reward I'm afraid. Unpaid work is still work apparently!
Drove as a minibus driver for a charity called Erskine 2 years ago. No D1 on licence. No problem.

Even if I'm not doing the walking? I'm just the driver and in my spare time the applyer of bandages and giver of paracetomol

I'm being put through the D1 tests as I drive kids around to sports fixtures for a school. I'm a teacher but still have to do this test!?

Do you do it for free? If not then you need the D1

If it is part of your job as a teacher, but not the main part, then perhaps there is some greyness, because you are being paid as a teacher. Probably, considering the responsibility, you should assume that you need the D1 under such circumstances unless the DVLA write to you confirming otherwise.

Browsing for a change in Minibus Insurance when I came across this old post.

To the folks saying you have driven D1 and got away with it if you passed after 1997 you lucky lucky guys. You HAVE to have his category on your licence before you drive a minibus from 9-16 passenger seats. The big clue is the D1 box it should say a date, if it has a dotted line you can not drive the vehicle. Jeepers have an accident in a hire vehicle without it and both yourself and the hire company could be in some serious doo doo. If you wish to do work for hire and reward you have to have your 101 code removed which requires a Minibus Test.

Very deceiving that gov. website "the maximum weight of the minibus is 3,500kg (or 4,250kg including specialist equipment for disabled passengers, such as a wheelchair ramp)"

Unladen 17 seat Transits are 3,120kg or 4600kg fully loaded.

Sorry for dragging up an old post but hope I helped for future reference.
