At last... the 500CE. Why didn't they put that 5 litre into W124?
Still, I'm more than happy that finally E-class coupe is back and with the right engine to boot.
You've obviously never seen the slightly flared wheelarches of a 500E?

Or like the latest Audi A6 perhaps?

Funny but it reminds me of the back end of the current 3-series coupe.

Aahh, the 500E ! Lovely looking motor, with plenty of power.

In LHD only? Didn't Porsche have sort of input in this?

I was talking about W124 coupe a.k.a. Merc CE. If I remember correctly it only had 220, 300 and 320 versions to choose from.

Looks absouetely stunning, as with all Mercs the design works best in black. Performance sounds pretty breathtaking, really nice car judgding by the review. The intial press photos simply didnt do it justice.

I'm slightly confused as to what market segment this car is aimed at, since its badged as an E-Class but its a W204 C-Class underneath.

You do remember correctly. I always wondered why they never made a 500CE too.

That would have been encroaching on it's big brothers territory, the SEC!

True. Though now MB understands that money is where you look for it. Not everyone will buy top-of-the-range MB just to get a V8. Some people are quite happy with C or E class and will not go further.

Great write-up Riggers. The E-class saloon looks bland but the coupe looks fantastic! Will look awesome in AMG kit

Same as the outgoing CLK probably. Isn't that just a W203 underneath?

how much will it be and I wish these road tests would show shots of the rear seats so I can see if my 4 and 6 yr old children would fit in the back.
Ah yes, poor form on my part there, Jonny - don't have a pic of rear seats, but a 4 and 6 year old should fit in - i'm not exactly tall at 5' 8" and a fag paper, but I would cope for medium-length journeys.

Price-wise, the 500 sport is £48,360 OTR
Riggers,

Are you the same Riggers of Autocar fame?
I wouldn't exactly say fame... but yes, one and the same. Late of Autocar, now proud new member of Team PH!
That's it Riggers, chin up! At least on PH nobody reads you sitting on the WC... laugh

So there won't be a direct replacement for the W209 CLK, just this E-based coupe?

Like the exterior, not so keen on the interior (or at least the one shown in these shots) as it looks far too angular. Also a bit too Audi looking (inside) which is fine in an Audi but not a Merc! Really hope quality standards have risen since my W209 CLK was produced!

The W209 was a graceful looking thing but the underlying quality of build/paint was dreadful. Sold mine back to MB after 11 months as I was that dissapointed (body rust, electrical & trim problems). A neighbour has just bought a delivery milage 320cdi CLK and that suffered a blown alternator within a week of delivery..

This E-Class coupe is based on the C-Class and intended to replace the CLK

Confusing, eh? hehe
