Is there a reason people seem to like the 306 D Turbo, but not the HDI?

I have had x2 306 D-Turbos, the first when I was 20 the second at 28. I concluded that they look better than they drive 2nd time around. A hugh disappointment. I would personally go for the MK3 Golf TDI which in stock guise handles better than the 306 IMO.
Are you mad? No way, no way, does a rolley polley mk3 golf handle as well as a 306

It looks like the HDi is listed as doing 54mpg while the earlier D Turbo is listed at 42 and 46mpg. Is the earlier D Turbo deffo the better car?? And is it the only one you can easily up the power on and run on veg oil??

my mums got a w plate (2000) 2.0 hdi 306 estate

its been very reliable, only problems in 9 years (had since new) are
terminal on alternator went rusty, (not much to fix)
air conditioning fault (needed a filter or something)
thats all i can rememebr going wrong, may have had a flat battery once or twice, but id say just about perfect

getting mid 50s mpg, high 50s on a run

handling on the estate isnt what you would call sporty, but i havent driven the other models

i think peugeot peaked with this series car (the x06) the newer ones are way to complicated, my dads got an 2003 807 2.2 HDI and its terrible, master brake cylinder gone, cambelt gone - obliterated the engine (needing replacement engine) various electrical problems, loads of error messages, passenger seatbelt bleeps at you all the time, rear blind riped itself + loads f other faults

but the 306 is perfect, where did it all go wrong?

I have a 306 DTurbo and it's quite good fun, cost next to nothing, handles very well (I thought the golf comment was laughable), be interested to see a 'how to' to turn up the pump biggrin

Also got a 307 HDi, I much prefer the D-Turbo for power and usability, the HDi is just dull, everywhere.

The HDi would be dulled by the massive weight of the 307 though! I just need to find out a few important stats, such as standard engine power and MPG now as I have seen some conflicting stuff.

306 1.9TD = 92hp, 145lbft
306 2.0HDi = 90hp, 167lbft

Pretty much what has been said already sums things up - the old XUD9 engine is agricultural but simple and reliable, and can be easily tweeked for more power (at the expense of off-boost smoke). Change the oil and coolant regularly, and it'll go on and on - only fault you generally hear of is the headgaskets failing. It's quite unflexible by todays standard in terms of power delivery, with it not coming "on boost" until 2200rpm or so, meaning that you can get caught wrong-footed. I used to average around 42mpg from my 306 1.9TD.

The later HDi engine is much more refined and flexible, with power coming from 1500rpm upwards. It's also much more economical, with 50mpg+ easily achieveable. The downsides are that thanks to the complexity it's not as reliable or easy to fix, but even then faults aren't that common - bottom pulleys and in-tank lift pumps being the common two. Get a 2001 onwards one and they're cheap to tax too thanks to low CO2 emissions.

As has been said, "DTurbo" is actually a trim level - it's basically a diesel XS.

Hope that helps.
