Interestingly, this week Victoria announced a big increase in speed camera deployment (with the associated big fanfare) yet were nowhere to be seen when research showed the 25% of the vehicles in Victoria are unroadworthy.

It never ceases to amaze me when I see a cop in the middle of nowhere just waiting for a victim. These days I get my kicks on gravel roads in my BMW GS bike away from the coppers.

I'd have thought that the first Aussie politico to stand up
and say that road safety is a lot more complex than merely
controlling speed would collect a lot of votes.

Or is it that most of the Aussie voters are mindless sheep
who really do think that speed control is the major tool
in the box when it comes to road safety ?

I'd be interested to see serious evidence of how many lives
these speed cameras have saved. Surely they must have this
evidence before installing more ?

I fear the highlighted section might be the truth..

As for the studies done have a look at this impartial, well supported and common sense government website... http://www.justice.vic.gov.au/wps/wcm/connect/Road...

There is another document here http://www.arrivealive.vic.gov.au/files/pdf/action...

In fact if you have a look on google there are a number of studies done and for some reason each state seems to have a number of different 'roads' departments

http://www.officeofroadsafety.wa.gov.au/ is yet another one.

I'd suggest most people are mindless sheep, but no most people don't seem to be fooled by the speeding campaign, but perhaps only to the extent that they know it's about money, not lives. The government even aired an anti-speeding add for a while that contained no speeding at all, just some young males driving like wkers. It does vary from state to state, and New South Wales (where I live) seems better than the other states and the UK (most plain cars are marked, cameras are limited and require 3 warning signs, don't ping you for going a few Ks over etc). They are lowering every speed limit possible though, such as 60km/h over an 8-laned bridge, 50km on a 4-lane road etc.

I don't think any significant politician has made a stand against the cameras, they just bring in too much revenue. In my state, the public is so clueless they keep voting the same idiots back into power.

I suspect the impounding, and refusal to release the car was to send a "road safety message". Playing the publicity game. Not a message I agree with but let them have their little game.

I think I need to see a 599 in the metal. I'll go for a drive after lunch and see if I can spot one.

That's fantastic, they should crush the car, it would make people take more care about who drives their car.

It wouldn't be hard to confirm who the driver was if he didn't wink

Maybe he didn't want to add evading police/resisting arrest to his record?

Alternatively, if you are that far up st creek you may as well keep paddling.

I think I agree with Deviant. Just because it was a Ferrari, doesn't mean they shouldn't impound it. As to who owns it, I believe it does not change anything.

Chances are the Tricked out Holdens they likely have would not have an issue keeping up.

That is correct. It does not matter who is the owner of the car...so if your HSV Clubsport is in for a service and the mechanic decides to go for a 'test drive' they can impound your car.

You get 3 hoon strikes on your license that do not clear, so if you get 'hoon lawed' twice now and then go 20 years of angelic driving before a slip of judgement and doing something silly they still tot up the 3 offences...bye bye car.

Cars can also be confiscated for driving without a license, registration and drink driving.

This country is pathetic in regards to speeding/driving.

You think you’ve got it tough? Trust me. Driving in the UK after 7 years of driving in Australia was like being unleashed in a libertarian, tolerant motoring heaven.
Why don't you vote your problem into the past?

I went to have a look. I'm 10 mins from Monaco.

Saw a couple of Califonias this afternoon and agree, the detail looks very Japanese after-market. Saw a blue one with the roof down and a red one with the roof up and don't think it makes much difference.

I also saw a black 612 and that looked much better.

Sounds like your government are even bigger thieves than ours.
