You're either considered too young for an "old mans car", and as a result you look like a rat with a gold tooth... I'm 32 but didnt care - I liked the car so I suited myself! You felt like you were driving a Bentley. Only thing I would change would be better fuel consumption... Realistically you'll get around 18-22 friom the 3.2 XJ... even on a run I only managed 23 at best, regardless of what anyone says. My father's XJS V12 seems better on fuel! Now that is very nice indeed! If only I didn't have a large commute.

Sorry, wouldnt touch it with a barge-pole. (For me) its got that John-Player Special/mutton sideburns and big moustache image. An Uncle and an Aunt both went through alot of Jags in the 80's and my Uncle had those facial attributes! Seriously though, unless its an early era-Jag I wouldnt go near them. Its new-money made good and the later Mondeos Jags (even though they arent Mondeos I still perceive them as Mondeos.... RangeRover/Landrovers will always be Rovers in my eyes too. Die Spawn of British Leyland die. sorry if I offend anyone but I'd rather have a 5 or 7series from that era any day of the week)

I love the XJ40, I've two at the moment. A well sorted one is a fantastic car, you have to know what your looking at when you buy one though, and be prepared to get your hands dirty!

The F-reg manual 3.6 one in the picture I posted earlier did almost bang on 30mpg on the trip from Calais to Monaco. That was all autoroutes with the cruise set to 130km/h, aircon on all the time and I think the trip computer reckoned 32mpg. There were a couple of performance comparisons on the gently rolling topography 2/3 of the way down through France, one against a 309 GTi-16, but apart from that it wasn't a bad way to get 4 people in comfort down to the South of France in half a day

I thought that perhaps you were dropped on your head as a child. Or that maybe you had absolutely no sense of style or familiarity with the concept of cool. "That poor man", I kept thinking to myself, "I bet he wears an anorak, with thick framed lenses and enjoys puzzles", but now you have mentioned "the Toyota Soarer", quite possibly the tackiest "luxo-barge" ever built and I think you should be shot for even mentioning it in the same thread as the XJ40. Just... Please... Stop...

My Grandpa had a couple of XJs.
The last one he had was a really dark purple with cream interior. Used to think it was a right beast when I was a lad.

XJs are still lovely, tasty motors with a charm of old skool british gangster, thug appeal !
I love them!
Superb presence, class, refinement, comfort, and surprisingly good pace.
IMHO, the X300/X308 are a much better looker, with the quad-lamps. The mid-80s (series 2 or 3?) are also very nice, especially in V12 guise!
The XJ40 do have a nice minesterial look to them.
The old girls do love a drink, but it's worth it!
As someone said on here earlier, you can easily pick up some early X300 Sports / Sovereigns / Executives for less than a grand. And these cars are very reliable too - my X300 3.2 Sport never missed a beat.

I got offered a 4.2 XJS on an F plate with only 54K from new and it was mint. The guy wanted to do a straight swap for my Dolomite 1500.....I was soooo tempted, but as I'm just 36 I too felt that I wasn't old enough to drive it..!
Wish I had got it now, would have made a great long distance cruiser even if the MPG would have bankrupted Me!!!

They are very very cool indeed, irrespective of your age. Indeed, I'm quite fancying an X300 XJR soon. So cheap, amd I prefer the looks to the X308. Saying that, I do like the XJ40 too. Great cars, and my friends Dad regularly got 140mph on the clock of his manual 3.6, all in silky smooth comfort. My other friends Dad used to have Soverigns as company cats. He did 50k mile a year with no problems - he kept them for 3 years.

I'd sooner have one than the obligatory fast-hatch that most people in their early 20's drive. Come on man. Is there nothing about that classic British styling and ridiculous extravagance that doesn't stir up a shred of patriotism in you? So much more character than any piece of German/Jap engineering of the same market.
