What are the coolest road cars that have been converted from a racing car that we know of? I'm thinking things like that F3 chassis on JC's Japan Motorworld (if that was ever real).

I'm sure there were a couple of full Le Mans spec F40's converted to road cars a while back, I very cleary remember that one was for sale in Autosport classifieds a few years back.

Street legal Sprint Cars are even cooler...

cool

http://www.motortrend.com/features/archive/112_970...

The Aussies may get this more than the Brit's, I don't think the U.K. has discovered Sprint Cars yet.

I used to pit crew for a modified ( think junior class), it had a less than 300 C.I.D. small block Chevy in it and put out around 550 H.P., we used to push start it on Saturdays, mid morning so we could bring it into the garage and check the timing before we loaded it onto the trailer to head for the track. With the soft dirt (clay) Hossier tires on it, on pavement, I could pull a wheelie until I either ran out of fuel or blew the engine. I went to highschool with a fellow that raced in the (WoO) "World of Outlaws" series for a while and he had a detuned Keith Black Hemi (Funny Car drag race engine) in it, roughly 1500 H.P. in a short circle track car that weighs around 2000 Lbs complete.... yikes

These things are rocket ships! At Eldora Speedway's half mile track in Ohio qualifying laps run around 12 seconds and thats on dirt with four corners! In race form they don't have a transmission they run what's called an "in and out box", they are direct drive so the engine RPMs are only effected by the final drive in the diff., you want to go faster or slower? Change the final drive gears in the quick change rear end to suit different conditions or different tracks. In the U.S. as we lap circle tracks counter clockwise the cars run no right front brake, it aids turn in and proper use of throttle and the 3 brakes pitches the car sideways into the turn.

Only better auto racing is Rallying in my opinion.

Im guessing the RSi. Quite cool, in a daft kind of way. I believe it was a test bed of sorts for the then forthcoming Golf MKIV R32's and other cars with the 4X4 haldex setup of the same platform. The RSi had a very similar 24v VR6 engine to the R32's also. However, I believe the race car was front wheel drive and 12v?

I think a few people dont quite understand the concept of this thread though. The beetle RSi is homologation special, while the 962c above is purely a race car which has been converted. The 962 and 917 were never homologated by porsche.

I've been trying to recall this for ages, but does anyone remember an American detective show from 70s in which one of the main characters
drove a Mclaren.

Something like this.

"Something like this." Only "like" this, unfortunately. The show was Hardcastle & McCormick and the car was a poor imitation of a McLaren M6GT on a Beetle chassis. I think they dubbed exhaust noise onto it from a decent car.

Great, thanks for that.

So the car was a fake, how disappointing.

Still, the real thing looks incredible.

Just watched a clip on Youtube, it looks really shabby. I used to love that when I was young.

There is a company in Australia building 917 replicas (very well, using original drawings and designs) and sending them over to Europe where they have Porsche engines fitted.
