If Carlsberg did Top Gear challenges....
Discussion
As with all these things, they seemed to make sense at the time:
Me: It'd be good to do a run for the charity I'm volunteering for
James: Beer would be good
Me: As in a Beer Run?
James: You mean like the original Beer Run: Smokey and the Bandit?
Me: That was 28 hours in the US
James: Well, Stelvio's 13.5 hours one way.
Me: You mean that iconic stretch of hair pin turns in the Italian Alps?
James: Yup and they have their own beer..
And so the idea was born:
1 week today, James, Guy and myself are recreating the original Beer
Run, Smokey and the Bandit, with a twist: London-Stelvio-London in 27
hours to get a case of fresh Stelvio beer, all in the name of charity and
delivered for Saturday night (15th August 2009).
That's about 1,600 miles in 27 hours driving round trip to that iconic
stretch of hair pins and switchbacks in the
Italian Alps. The various online route providers reckon it's 13.5
hours each way but that doesn't include petrol or rest stops or wait
time at the crossing. Smokey and the Bandit was 28 hours, we've
figured because we don't have a truck in tow, we can do it in 27
hours.
I reckon this insane idea should appeal to most PHers It would
be great to get some support on here. Oh and could we trouble you for a
little money as well? Even if all you contribute is the equivalent of
a pint of beer, it'll make a huge difference: www.justgiving.com/27hours
It's all in aid of the charity for whom my wife and I will be
volunteering in Tanzania: http://www.foreverangels.org.
The journey is entirely self funded and every penny donated will go
direct to the charity which we'll see in action when we get out there
in December.
Thanks for reading!
Cheers

Lovin' your work as always chaps...
Gutted I cannot come; Sanj, why do you always arrange these things when I'm doing stuff? I'm starting to get paranoid.
Did Kirsty mention she wanted to hire little Jack? I'll miss him for the 2 years whilst you're away, but am sure he'll come back a well rounded 5 year old.

Hi everybody,
Yeah, I know we are crazy but it is all in the name of charity.
For anyone that wants to see us off we will be leaving from the Dome at 6.30pm on Friday and will be returning to the Dome at 9.30pm on Saturday .... well that's the plan anyway.
Please donate as much as you can, every little helps so even if you can only manage a pound please do so. If you do donate please do Gift Aid as it makes a big difference.
For those who don't know GO VRS we are a blue Skoda VRS Mark 2, who have participated in Cannonball Run Europe, Furball, Pistonhead meets and The Petrolhead Nirvana meets at the Ace cafe.
We will be at the Sunday Service this weekend and also at the Ace on Monday.

Keep your foot hard on the pedal, son never mind those brakes,
let it all hang out 'cause you gotta run to make.
The boys are thirsty in london,
and there's beer in stelvio,
you gotta bring it back, no matter what it takes.
Now THAT'S how charity is supposed to be done.
Good luck & God-speed.
And remember....keep it on the ground when you put that hammer down.
let it all hang out 'cause you gotta run to make.

However tempting, mind the speed in Switzerland.... they have 0 tolerance and no sense of humor.
Nice country though.
Don't worry the plan is to do what the locals are doing!! As we had a friend on the Cannonball Run 2006 had a £2500 plus licence so don't want to go there.Nice country though.

I got back from a mini Nurburgring/Stelvio Euro-trip a couple of weeks back, and unleaded was anything up to €1.75/litre in Switzerland. As soon as we went through Basel and crossed the border into France it was back down to €1.25-1.30/litre.
What are diesel prices like at the moment....?just remember this is for charity and fuel costs don't come into it so put a £1 in the pot
