This is better than a Phantom.
I've said many times how the segue from RT to Red Label Arnage left me preferring the perfect charms of the LS Lexus and here, having tilled and been ferried in the new Roller, I'd rather be gunning a 760. Every day...
'Badge' has a lot to answer for and oft beguiles the unthinking masses.

Agreed, but dismissing the badge, the Phantom is much more special than any 7 Series. 'Badge' has a lot to answer for and oft beguiles the unthinking masses.
Far more desirable, even if it wasn't as objectively competent.
Of course but £15k bags you something which 'is better' than the cheapest, used Phantoms.
Semi-discretion may be a disease of age but the specialness of which you speak is purely something to talk about: in practice and when considering actual ownership, I prefer driving and overall 'delivery competence' to the impressions of others and whilst aesthetics will always be moot, the 760 that has just been and the one we see new, today, is simply better vfm and frankly, the better car, afaic.
The Phantom is a trinket.

You're ascribing an emotion to a psychological predisposition, not anything to which you could attach a definable or commonly agreeable superiority; thus, the differential is precisely that - opinion or bull headed bias.
Is the Phantom more comfortable? No.
Does it ride better? No.
Is is quicker? No.
Does it handle? No.
Is the material quality any better? No.
Is the assembly quality better? No.
Has it more gadgets? No.
Does anybody care? Of course not! It's a Phantom.
Ah but how does it make you feel? Like a German interpretation of something bespokey ---> so why not just get one of the default triumvirate's range toppers..?
It really is a question of to what extent the badge has you seduced and/or to what extent you worry about others' perceptions.
Maybe not your good self, Trommers but I am convinced the majority who regurgitate the standard view.

I've been in and driven a Phantom extensively.
Lambswool carpets aside, the material qualities are close to identical; the fit and finish is so executed.
Up a local test hill with a steep incline the engine protests ever so slightly where a humble LS430 V8 retains the silence.
Wrt, assumption is the mother of all f@ck ups and I perfectly understand the assumption based on heresay that the regal Phanton would kick the 7's butt ito quality but - are you assuming the RR is massively better or basing the comment on having tried 'em oot?

The material quality in a Phantom is better than anything BMW can get their hands on.
BMW own RR, the license to the brand name and associated trademarksEven though Der has been in the RR, I think the 7 is crap for what it is, I went in the new 730d, the ride was st as in worse than my 5 series, and the interior was something the RR would laugh at.. I have also been in a phantom..
You have to see these cars in person to appreciate the styling as photographs just dont do it justice. The overall impression, to me at least, is that it looks much more compact and overall I consider that it is, particularly in L spec, truly a piece of sculpture. The flat surfaces of the bonnet in particular, the rear 'shoulders' and that clever horizontal bright-metal strip below the kidney grilles. Genius!
I've also sat in a 730dL (as the Geneva show) that had circa £40k of Individual Options fitted and careful selection from the available list would see you in something that was really quite special (if you're not price sensitive).

What's so special aboit this engine?
Torque and economy aside there are lots of smaller and similarly,if not more poweful engines around:Ferrari V8,Lambo V10,GM V8 Supercharged,Nissan V6 TT,etc.
The ancient Lambo V12 in SV spec does 100hp more without turbos.
Just a lazy V12 for an uber-rep car

All of those engines bar the lambo v12 are about the same power. If not less. Plus not many of them will do a combined 21 mpg.Torque and economy aside there are lots of smaller and similarly,if not more poweful engines around:Ferrari V8,Lambo V10,GM V8 Supercharged,Nissan V6 TT,etc.
