Lovely writeup - brought back great memories of living in Sheffield with the Snake Pass on my doorstep and regular dawn raids to Glossop and Castleton, albeit in more modest machinery. One my most memorable drives ever was across the A57 to Manchester - in an Allegro.
I bet that was quite a drive!!I can just imagine you leaning on the doorhandles around the corners, trying not to use the brakes to conserve momentum!
20 years ago now but I remember it well: a Friday night, two carloads of lads from Sheffield off for a big weekend in Manchester. For a laugh, we chose to swap cars with my friend driving my XR2 and myself behind the wheel of the Allegro. The Allegro boasted very little grip and had the classic BL buslike driving position, but its torquey unburstable engine and surprising nimbleness/chuckability made it much more fun than I could have hoped.
Within a few miles along the Snake Pass I was comfortably able to pull away from the XR2, but then I was already a practiced hooner against an average Allegro owner.
Another highly memorable night run around that era (this time in the reverse direction) occurred while I was in the XR2, picking up just out of Manchester a boggo Fiesta that was being pedalled remarkably swiftly - quickly enough that it wasn't until Ladybower or thereabouts that I was finally able to overtake. That night was a formative one in my nascent blat-artist career, as I learned authoritatively that the driver is much more important than the car.
