The leftfield option is to buy a MkV R32 or 8P 3.2 and put the R36 engine in.....if it fits?

Bit pricey, can't you get a new WRX for half that?

And is it 'proper' 4WD or Haldex like the R32?

It's Haldex.
Body comes with 3 or 5 doors.

And I agree, it's lacking one or two cylinders.
A shopping car with a 4-banger for about 30k. woohoo

You can spend that on a 4-pot diesel 1-series without trying very hard. hehe

How long is the Frankfurt show on for BTW?

What's meant to be revealed tomorrow? Anything interesting?

Only through the likes of Motorpoint. Most of the stock WRXs in this country have gone, replaced by the WRX-S which is still nearly £10k cheaper.

It looks like a Golf R32, a Scirocco and a Seat Ibiza blanded into one.

I definitely wouldn't swap this for my WRXS, massively over priced just like the GTI.

As an ex R32 owner this is really disappointing. A major part of the appeal when I bought mine was the V6 growel confused

better mpg out of a 2.0t - well couldnt be much worse biggrin

got to be honest i'm not that taken with the external looks of the mk6 golf and the r20 isnt any better to me. i sat in a mk6 gti and loved the interior, but for external looks i much prefer my mk5

I also prefer the mk5 to the mk6, it looks as though the mk6 is a step backwards IMO (exterior wise). The mk5 GTi was a handsome car, this just doesn't do it for me.

I sold my MKV R32 in March, been awaiting this and was ready to place an order.

However, why would I pay 30k, when I can buy a year old S3, essetially the same car, for 20ish.

The STI Impreza with PPP looks ever more tempting.

In fact, http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1243979.htm

I've always thought it was the Audi that should've had the V6 engine.

Taking the Mk1 Golf ethos of light weight and handling the MkIV R32 was a total lard arse. Would have been so much better as a 1.8T 4Motion, or in this case an R. I still think the big capacity V engines should be in Audis and the 4 turbos in the VWs - the S3 should be an S32 or now an S36 (or similar)

The price is steep but at least there will be the option to go for 300bhp for very little money. The MK4 and MK5's do sound lovely, but with regards to raw pace they aren't anything special with virtually no potential unless your willing to spend big.

Looks like the Mk5 will be the last proper VR, a sad day as a VW nut! At least Audi are making the RS3 or soon we'll all be driving poxy 2.0T's. I'm off to search for a tidy Corrado VR6 before the whole world realises turbo power is souless....

Agreed.

The old R32 sounded great but that was it. It wasn't a good drive.

I'd happily swap some of the sound for a far improved drive and less weight.
